MEAC ANNOUNCES BASEBALL WEEKLY HONORS

Bethune-Cookman first baseman Osvaldo Torres earned MEAC Player of the Week honors in baseball, the league announced on Monday. Norfolk State’s Joey Seal was named Pitcher of the Week, while teammate Chris Joyce earned Rookie of the Week accolades.

 

 Torres (1B, 6-4, Sr., Cidra, Puerto Rico) batted .538 (7-for-13) at the plate with four home runs, two doubles and nine RBI to help the Wildcats to a 3-2 mark last week. He scored seven runs, had a slugging percentage of 1.615 and was walked five times. Torres also posted 28 putouts and recorded a perfect fielding average at first base.

 

 Joyce (3B, 6-0, So., Chesapeake, Virginia) led the Spartans to a 5-1 mark, while hitting .444 (8-for-18). He scored five runs and posted one double and three RBI. In the third game of the series against Savannah State, he was a perfect (3-for-3) from the plate with one double and one RBI. For the week, Joyce registered five walks, had one stole base, collected three putouts and tallied eight assists.

 

 Seal (P, 6-0, Sr., Newport News, Virginia) struck out 10 of 33 batters in game one against Maryland Eastern Shore to become Norfolk State’s all-time career strikeout leader with 251. He pitched a complete game against the Hawks and allowed three runs on five hits in 32 at bats. Seal recorded a 1.74 ERA and pitched 10.1 innings in two games for the Spartans last week.

 

Other Top Performers:

Jarrett Bibb (DSU) led the Hornets with three home runs, one double and five RBI in four games.

Hiram Burgos (B-CU) struck out nine batters and allowed one hit in five innings against the Hawks of Maryland Eastern Shore.

Moriba George (NSU) batted .615 (8-for-13) with one triple, one double, one RBI and five stolen bases to aid the Spartans in six games last week.

Jeremy Jones (NCAT) scored eight runs, one home run, one double, and four RBI in five games for the Aggies.

Tim Johnson (NCAT) had 10 strikeouts last week including nine in a win over Delaware State.

Josh Schmidt (DSU) posted an ERA of 1.12 in his fourth complete game of the season for the Hornets against North Carolina A&T.

Harry Williams (CSU) hit the go ahead home run against Virginia Military Institute to help the Eagles snap a 30-game losing streak.
