The Hornets took both game of the doubleheader against the Spartans today at Soldier Field, winning the first game 11-5 and the second game 4-2. The two wins brings the Hornets record to 13-22, 8-2 MEAC and the Spartans fall to 13-16, 38 in the MEAC.
The first game was tied 5-5 going in the bottom of the seventh inning when Jamie Friel singled in Kevin Noriega for the go ahead run. The Hornets would go on to score two more runs in the inning as well as three in the eighth to bring the final score to 11-5. In the game, both Jimmy Johnson and Jose Sanchez hit home runs.
Sanchez led the offense in the first game, goign 2-for-5 with one run and four RBI. Jarrett Bibb went 1-for-3 with three RBI.
The winning pitcher for the first game was Justin Bittner (1-0) who pitched three innings of scoreless relief. Start JR McAllister pitched 5.2 innings, giving up four runs on seven hits.
The losing pitcher for the Spartans was Frankie Caldeyro (1-4). Caldeyro came into the game during the fifth inning in relief for starter Joey Seal. He gave up three runs on three hits.
In the second game, the Spartans had a 1-0 lead going into the bottom of the second inning. There were two runners on base with Friel at the plate when he hit a three-run homerun to right field giving the Hornets a 3-1 lead. The Hornets went on to win by a score of 4-2.
Friel led the offense in the second game goign 1-2 with one run and three RBI.
Josh Schmidt (4-4) was the winning pitcher for the Hornets going six innings while only giving up two runs on seven hits. Tony Tevis pitched a scoreless seventh inning for his second save on the year.
Quinn Bright (3-5) was the losing pitcher for the Spartans, giving up four runs on five hits.
The Hornets return to play on Tuesday at Soldier Field against the University of Delaware at 3:00 p.m.
