MEAC ANNOUNCES BASEBALL WEEKLY HONORS

Bethune-Cookman outfielder Jose’ Ortiz earned MEAC Player of the Week honors in baseball, the league announced on Tuesday. Teammate Hiram Burgos was named Pitcher of the Week, while Delaware State’s Troy Drummond earned Rookie of the Week accolades.

 

 Ortiz (OF, 5-9, Jr., Juncos, Puerto Rico) tallied a .450 batting average to help the Wildcats to a 3-2 mark, including a sweep of Norfolk State. Ortiz was 9-for-20 at the plate and posted one home run, one double and four RBI. He walked once and registered six putouts from centerfield.

 

 Drummond (OF, 5-11, Fr., Newark, Del.) was 6-for-12 (.500) at the plate and recorded one home run, two doubles, and three RBI in three games for the Hornets. In the second game of a doubleheader against Florida A&M, Drummond batted a .667 with three runs to lead his team to a 10-4 victory.

 

 Burgos (P, 5-11, Jr., Cayey, Puerto Rico) allowed one unearned run on three hits and struck out a season-high eight batters in seven innings of play for the Wildcats. Burgos did not allow a walk or an earned run in seven innings of play in a 10-1 conference win over the Norfolk State Spartans.

Tim Johnson (NCAT) struck out five Maryland Eastern Shore batters and tallied a 1.63 ERA in 7.2 innings of play for the Aggies.

Tim Jones (FAMU) tallied two runs and three RBI to help the Rattlers to a 3-2 mark last week.

Roman Lancara (B-CU) struck out 3-of-10 batters with no walks or runs in three innings against Jacksonville.

Joe McIntyre (NCAT) recorded a .429 batting average with one home run, one triple, one double and four RBI for the Aggies.

Wynton Weather (DSU) went 7-for-11 (.640) with one double and four RBI in three games for the Hornets.
