Delaware State Splits Doubleheader with Florida A&M

The Hornets split the doubeleheader against Florida A&M today, losing the first game 7-4 and winning the second game 10-4 at Soldier Field. The Hornets improved their record to 11-20 and 6-2 in the MEAC while the Rattlers record is now 10-15 and 3-5 in the MEAC.

The Hornets tied the first game 4-4 in the fourth inning with a solo home runs by both Jose Sanchez and Jamie Friel while Troy Drummond drove in two runs off a double to right field. However, the Hornets were unable to score the rest of the game off of Rattlers starter Miguel Parga.

The Rattlers came back and scored two more runs in the seventh inning and took the lead for good when Corey McFadden hit a two-run home run to right field. The Rattlers won the game 7-4.

Leading offensively for the Rattlers were Jared Jeffries, Corey McFadden and Timothy Schalch. Jeffries went 3-for-5 with one run and two RBI. McFadden and Schalch also contributed two RBI on the day.

Troy Drummond led the Hornets on offense going 3-for-5 with two RBI. Sanchez and Friel both hit a home run.

The winning pitcher for the Rattlers was Parga (3-1) who pitched a complete game, giving up four runs on eight hits and striking out eight batters.

JR McAllister (3-2) was the losing pitcher for the Hornets. He pitched 8.2 innings while giving up seven runs on eight hits. McAllister struck out 15 batters on the day. Friel came in to get the last batter out of the game in relief for McAllister.

The Hornets took the lead in the third in the second game after falling behind 3-2 ater the first inning. The Hornets scored two runs in the third to give them the lead for good off homeruns by Justin Bittner and Drummond. This brought the score to 4-3. The Hornets offense would score five more runs in the bottom of the sixth, bringing the final score to 10-4.

Leading the Hornets offensively was Bittner and Wynton Weather. Bittner went 4-for-4 with four runs and four RBI. Weather was 3-for-3 with 3 RBI's. Bittner also contributed two home runs while Drummond hit one.

Starter Josh Schmidt (3-4) was the winning pitcher for the Hornets, pitching a complete game and only giving up four runs on eight hits with eight strikeouts.
Anthony Espin was the losing pitcher for the Rattlers, going four innings while allowing five runs on eight hits. Cirilo Manego pitched two innings of relief, giving up five runs on six hits.

The Hornets return to play at Towson on Tuesday, April 15. The game will begin at 3:00p.m.
