Rattlers Trounce Morehouse, 12-4

Florida A&M picked up their second win in two days as they defeated Morehouse College, 12-4, Thursday afternoon at Perkerson Park.

FAMU (9-15) used eight hits and eight Morehouse errors to score 12 runs, while the Tigers pounded out 10 hits.

Both Tim Schalch and Corey McFadden finished with two hits each to lead the Rattlers, with Schalch driving in four runs and McFadden driving in three.

MC (18-19) was led by both Hank McCladdie and Brian Gray with two hits.

Jessie Cardenas (1-0) picked up his first win of the season as he pitched four innings, allowing four hits, two earned runs and striking out two for the Rattlers, while Michael Brooks (3-4) took the loss for the Tigers, allowing five hits and striking out six in five and two-third innings of work.

MC grabbed the early lead in the bottom of the first as Dunte Artis scored from third on a Joshua Wright fielder’s choice, making the score 1-0.

FAMU would take the lead in the top of the second as Thaddous McBurrows scored from third on a Steve Cunningham’s fielder’s choice. Then both Cunningham and Jared Grace would score on a Schalch two-run single, giving the Rattlers a 3-1 lead.

MC tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the second as Jarvis Askew scored on a Brian Gray RBI single, followed by Gray would score on Jarrell James RBI single.

Tim Jones would put the Rattlers back in the lead in the top of the third inning as he homered to make the score 4-3.

A Schalch RBI sacrifice bunt in the top of the fourth would score Adam Gordon from third, increasing the FAMU lead to 5-3.

The Tigers would score their final run in the bottom of the fifth inning as McCladdle scored on a Charles Evans RBI single, cutting the Rattlers’ lead to 5-4.

FAMU would score seven more runs, two in the sixth, four in the seventh, and one in ninth for the 12-4 final.

Up next for the Rattlers will be Delaware State with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 11 and one game on Sunday, April 12 in Dover, Del., in a 1 p.m. start both days
