The Delaware State Hornets remain winless with an 18-8 loss to Towson at Soldier Field on Wednesday afternoon.
The Hornets record fell to 0-8 on the season while Towson improved to 3-4.
The Tiger’s offense exploded early in the game, scoring six runs in the first inning and never looked back.
Leading offensively for the Tigers were Gary Helmick, Matt Collins and Chris Wychock. Wychock went 2-for-5 with 4 RBI’s and 3 runs scored. Collins was perfect on the day going 5-for-5 with 4 RBI’s and 2 runs scored. Helmick was 3-for-6 with 2 runs scored and 5 RBI.
Hornets’ starter Jamie Friel took the loss, his first on the season, giving up 12 runs in his four innings of work. Ryne Scheiwe pitched one inning of work, giving up six runs. Mike Ingram, David Langton and JR McAllister pitched scoreless baseball for the Hornets in the final four innings of the game.
Offensively for the Hornets, the team was led by Justin Bittner and Jose Portela. Bittner finished the day 1-for-4 with 6 RBI’s and 1 one scored, which includes a grand slam in the 7th inning. Portela was 2-for-4 with 2 runs scored.
The winning pitcher on the day for the Tigers was Austin Hurd. He pitched three innings, only giving up one run and four hits. Wes Shifflet pitched three innings of relief of two-hit baseball. Josh Squartrito, Corey Cascio and Jon Dupski each pitched one inning of relief.
The Hornets return to play this weekend with a three-game series at home against NJIT. The first game will begin at 2:30pm on Friday.
