On the heels of one of the best pitching performances in Norfolk State history, Spartan right hander Joey Seal has picked up three national pitcher of the week honors.
After pitching a school-record 11 innings in a 1-0, 12-inning win over Lafayette, Seal has been named the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) National Co-Pitcher of the Week. He was also selected as the Ping! Baseball Spotlight Performance of the Week and the Black College Baseball Pitcher of the Week.
Despite not factoring into the decision in the Spartans’ win, the 6-0, 170-pound Seal allowed just four hits, walked one (an intentional pass in the 10th) and tied his career-high with 11 strikeouts. He retired 16 straight batters from the fourth through ninth innings against the defending Patriot League champion Leopards.
Seal was lifted after the 11th inning. NSU reliever Frankie Caldeyro earned the win after pitching a scoreless 12th inning when Ryan Wiggins delivered an RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the 12th.
Through two starts this season, Seal is 1-0 with a 1.00 ERA. He has fanned 15 in 18 innings and allowed just eight hits.
