Junior catcher Brad Stephenson was 3-for-5 and drove in a season-high five runs to lead Norfolk State to a 10-5 win over Old Dominion on Wednesday night at Marty L. Miller Field.
Stephenson had a double and triple among his three hits to help the Spartans snap a five-game losing streak and earn a season split of its series with the Monarchs (13-11). Four other Spartans had two hits apiece.
ODU took a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Jimmy Miles led off with a single and advanced to second on groundout. Miles then stole third, and Stephenson’s throw down was kicked away, allowing Miles to score.

The Monarchs took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth. Anthony Shawler led off the frame with a triple to right-center. He scored on David Burns’ RBI grounder.
But NSU rallied with a pair of two-out runs in the bottom of the fifth. ODU starter Dexter Carter walked two hitters in the inning, and Stephenson made him pay with a two-out, two-run triple to deep right field to give the Spartans a 3-2 advantage.
ODU took a 5-3 lead in the see-saw game on Joe Velleggia’s three-run double in the top of the sixth.
But NSU stormed back with a five-run bottom of the sixth to take an 8-5 lead. Brandon Hairston and Chris Joyce both singled off Carter, and Ryan Wiggins was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
With two outs, Lynch walked off ODU reliever Cory Toth to score Hairston. Moriba George followed with a two-run single to give the Spartans the lead for good. Stephenson followed with a two-run double to left, making it 8-5.
NSU added a pair of insurance runs in the eighth inning on an RBI single by Hairston and a sac fly by Joyce.
