Visiting VMI scored nine runs in the final three innings to take an 11-2 win over Norfolk State on Wednesday afternoon at Marty L. Miller Field.
With the game tied 2-all entering the seventh, VMI (5-12) got the leadoff hitter on base. A.J. Yoder walked off Spartan reliever Frankie Caldeyro and advanced to third on a pair of wild pitches. Yoder then scored on a sac fly by Mike Roberts to give the Keydets a 3-2 lead.
VMI extended its lead to 7-2 with a four-run eighth. Sam Roberts lined an RBI single off NSU (7-7) reliever Horace Smith to start the scoring. Roberts came around to score on a wild pitch by Smith. Justin Hess, who doubled earlier in the inning, came around to score on the first of two Spartan errors in the frame, and Yoder capped the scoring with an RBI single.
The Keydets added four more in the ninth to widen their lead. Alex Haitsuka had a sac fly, Shane Geisslinger a two-run double, and another run scored on a two-out NSU error.
Caldeyro (2-2) took the loss for NSU. He allowed one hit and two earned runs in 2.2 innings.
Matt Edwards (1-0) was the winning pitcher for the Keydets. He pitched 1.1 scoreless innings, allowing one hit.
VMI picked up a run in the top of the first. Geisslinger tripled to start the game, and scored on a groundout by Yoder. But the Spartans answered with two runs in the bottom of the first. Chase Bailey walked with two outs, and John Boyd followed with a two-run homer to right-center off VMI starter Jason Farley. It was Boyd’s second homer this season and the 10th of his career.
The Keydets tied the game at 2-all in the top of the fifth. Geisslinger walked, was sacrificed to second and stole third. With two outs, Geisslinger scored on a single by Tanner Biagini.
Moriba George was 2-for-3 for the Spartans. Sam Roberts was 3-for-5 for VMI, and Geisslinger, Ballard and Hess had two hits each.
NSU opens MEAC play with a three-game series this weekend at North Carolina A&T. The teams play a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
