ODU Starts Fast, Tops NSU 11-5

Host Old Dominion scored 10 runs in the first four innings of the game to gain a big early lead en route to an 11-5 win over Norfolk State on Wednesday afternoon at the Bud Metheny Baseball Complex.

ODU (10-4) scored five times in the first, three times in the third and twice in the fourth off NSU starter Joey Seal, who dropped to 2-1 on the year. Bryan Cipolla went 3-for-5 to pace the Monarchs’ 14-hit attack. Max Most, David Burns, Chris Buss and Gerard Hall had two hits apiece, while Burns and Bus knocked in two runs each.

NSU scored twice in the top of the first thanks to a two-out ODU error. The Spartans scored twice more in the sixth when Chris Joyce scored Brad Stephenson with an RBI double. Joyce later scored on another Monarchs’ error.

NSU scored its last run in the eighth when Joyce doubled and scored on a single by Ryan Wiggins.

Joyce was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a pair of doubles for NSU. Stephenson and Wiggins also drove in runs.

Seal took the loss, allowing 11 hits and 10 runs, eight earned, in four innings. He walked four and struck out five.

David Wagner (1-1) earned the win for ODU, allowing four runs, one earned, in 5.2 innings. He walked two and fanned four. Robbie Watkins got the save by pitching the final 3.1 innings.

NSU returns home for a doubleheader on Sunday against Longwood at Marty L. Miller Field beginning at 1 p.m.
