The Hornets bats lit up the scoreboard in the team’s 14-11 win over Temple at Soldier Field this afternoon. The win brings the Hornets record to 2-10 while the Owls fall to 4-6.
The scoring started early for both teams and never stopped until the end of the game. There were six lead changes in the game while it was tied up twice. Yet, the Hornets came out on top as they scored 14 runs on 16 hits, giving them their second win of the season.
The score was tied 11-11 in the bottom of the eight inning when Jarrett Bibb came to bat. He had runners on the corners and all he needed was a hit to score Jamie Friel from third, to give the Hornets the go ahead the run. Bibb delivered that and more when he hit a 3-run homerun to centerfield, giving the Hornets some insurance with a 14-11 lead.
This was all the team needed as JR McAllister pitched a lights-out ninth inning for the Hornets, striking out one and forcing two ground outs. The save was the first for McAllister on the season.
David Langton (1-2) was the winning pitcher for the Hornets. Langton pitched one inning while only giving up one hit and one run in relief for the Hornets. Starter Jamie Friel pitched six innings, giving up 12 hits and 9 runs. Friel was relieved by Mike Ingram who pitched one inning, also only giving up one hit and one run.
The losing pitcher for the Owls was Ben White (0-1). White pitched 1.2 innings of relief, giving up 2 hits and the 3 runs. Starter Eric Fritz pitched four innings. He gave up 9 runs on 12 hits.
Bibb led the Hornets on offense going 4-for-5 with 3 runs scored, 6 RBI’s and one homerun. Jared Lineweaver also had a good day on offense as he was 4-for-5 with 1 run, 3 RBI’s and a home run.
Sean Barksdale led the Owls on offense. He was 2-for-4 with 3 RBI’s. Mark Ortega went 2-for-4 with 2 runs and 3 RBI’s.
The Hornets return to play this weekend with a doubleheader on Saturday at home against Lemoyne. The first game of the doubleheader will begin at 12 noon.
