UMES Forces Extra Innings, But Lehigh Wins 4-2

Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) allowed Lehigh to score twice in extra innings, the top of the eighth of the seven inning game, to post a 4-2 win in game two of the double header at Hawks Stadium.

The loss keeps the Fighting Hawks winless in their first five attempts.

UMES was on the board first again, posting a lone run in the third inning when Pat Hercinger scored Remo Orsini, who had reached on an error. Hercinger's single was his team leading third RBI of the season.

Lehigh (2-4) posted two runs in the fifth inning but UMES tied it right back up in the bottom of the fifth. Josh Dunham sacrificed over Orsini and Phil Vaughn to put runners on second and third. Hercinger would pick up another RBI, this time on a sacrifice fly to center that plated Orsini.

Dan Sterling got the start for UMES. He threw five innings, allowed just two Mountain Hawk hits and two unearned runs. He did allow six walks but posted a solid eight Ks.

He would be relieved by Elliott Arrington. Arrington would work two and one third innings, putting what would be the losing runs on base.

With two on he gave way to Mike Roberts who allowed a deep shot to right field that would score Logan Marshall. Joe Ercolano would pick up the RBI. The second run came when Geoffrey Campbell scored on a Billy Goldman sacrifice bunt. The suicide squeeze would plate Campbell and Goldman was safe at first. UMES would cut down Ercolano trying to advance during the play.

Arrington would get the loss while Mountain Hawk reliever Joe Matteo got the win.

Greg Angelo pitched the eighth inning to earn the save. He allowed a lead-off hit to Russel Duetschmann but then retired the next three batters.

UMES out hit Lehigh, collecting six hits to their five. Hercinger and Duetschmann each had a pair while Vaughn and Orsini had one.

Ercolano was 2-2 with an RBI for Lehigh.

UMES is off until Saturday when they host the Rhode Island in a double header starting at noon.
