Doug Bream knocked in three runs with a pair of hits to lead visiting Liberty past Norfolk State 5-1 on Wednesday afternoon in the Spartans’ home opener at Marty L. Miller Baseball Field.
Break hit an RBI single in the top of the second inning to get the Flames (4-0) on the board first off NSU (2-1) starter Quinn Bright. Then with two outs and the bases loaded in the top of the third, Break blooped a soft flare over the head of Spartan shortstop Moriba George into left field to score two more Liberty runs.
That was enough for Flames starter Andrew Wilson (1-0). He pitched five scoreless innings, allowing three hits with one walk and no strikeouts, to earn the victory.
Liberty added two more runs in the sixth on an RBI single by Kenneth Negron, who finished 2-for-4, and a run-scoring fielder’s choice by Errol Hollinger.
NSU got its lone run in the eighth. George walked for the third time of the day and later scored from third on an RBI single by John Boyd . It was Boyd’s team-leading sixth RBI of the season through three games.
Liberty out-hit NSU 9-4, and the Spartans stranded eight runners.
Bright (0-1) took the loss in his Spartan debut. He allowed six hits and five earned runs to go with four strikeouts in 5.1 innings.
NSU returns to action this weekend when it hosts a three-game series with Lafayette. The teams play a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. on Saturday, then a single game at noon on Sunday.
