UCF Pounds Rattlers In Game Two, 16-2

The University of Central Florida (UCF) unleashed a 15-hit attack Saturday afternoon, rolling past the Florida A&M Baseball team, 16-2 in the second game of a three-game weekend series at Jay Bergman Field.

FAMU (0-2) punched out six hits, led by Jarried Jeffries with two hits, followed by Steve Cunningham, Timothy Schalch, Chris Fullman and Chris Justin, all with one hit each.

The Knights were led by Dwayne Bailey and Shane Brown, who each finished with three hits apiece.

Kyle Sweat (1-0) got the win for UCF, scattering three hits and striking out in five innings of work, while Anthony Espin (0-1) took the loss for FAMU, giving up eight hits, seven earned runs and striking out five in five innings of work.

UCF grabbed the early lead in the bottom of the second, as Chris Duffy scored on a Evan Stobbs bases loaded walk. Then a Rob Lara two-run single would score both Ryan Richardson and Shane Brown.

Evan Stobbs would then score on a Josh Siebenaler sacrifice fly to left field, followed by Lara scoring on Dwayne Bailey’s RBI double, giving the Knights, a 5-0 lead.

The Knights picked up a run in the bottom of the third on a Collin Arnold sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Duffy, increasing their lead to 6-0.

Siebenaler scored a run in the bottom of the fourth for UCF on a Tyson Auer RBI single for a 7-0 UCF advantage, then Auer would later score on a wild pitch, followed by a Brown RBI double to right field scoring both Duffy and Arnold, extending the Knights’ lead to 10-0.

UCF added more to their lead in the bottom of the sixth, as Duffy scored on Ryan Richardson’s RBI double to left field. Then Brown would score on a FAMU wild pitch, making the score 12-0.


The Knights’ lead grew to 15-0 in the bottom of the seventh inning, as a Brown two-run double to left field scored both Kyle Mills and Arnold, followed by Richardson scoring on a FAMU infielder’s error.

FAMU picked a pair of runs in the top of the eighth inning as Adam Gordon scored on Steven Cunningham’s RBI single, before Cunningham himself scored on an RBI grounder by Thaddous McBurrows, cutting the Knights’ lead to 15-2.

Bailey, who had tripled in the previous at-bat for UCF, increased the Knights’ lead to 16-2 in the bottom of the eighth, scoring on a Chadd Hartman sacrifice fly to center field.

FAMU will conclude the three game series with UCF tomorrow at 1 p.m.
