The Delaware State Hornets ( 22-26-2) advanced with a win over rival Maryland-Eastern Shore ( 10-45) 8-4. The win snapped a seven game losing streak for Hornets. DSU will face North Carolina A&T in the elimination game at 10:00 a.m. tomorrow at Marty Miller Field in Norfolk, VA.
Tom Shelley had another complete day at the plate going 3 for 4 with one RBI, with the big one coming in the eighth inning.
The Hornets had a big third inning when Tom Shelly doubled to left field to start the four run inning. After a Eric Allen walk, Justin Bittner reached on a fielder’s choice, and Brandon Gravely singled to left field, scoring Shelly. Winton Weather singled to right field advancing Bittner and Gravely giving the Hornets a 5-2 lead.
Mike Ingram pitched the last four innings for the Hornets, striking out seven batters and allowing only one hit to secure the win.
Top seed Bethune-Cookman will square off against Norfolk State tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. and the winner will advance to the championship round on Sunday. The winner of the Delaware State vs. N.C. A&T game will face the loser of the Bethune-Cookman and Norfolk State match-up and that winner will advance to the championship game.
