The Delaware State University Hornets won the final game, 15-13, of a three game series against North Carolina A&T Aggies, giving them sole possession of second place in the MEAC with a two game lead over the Aggies. The win improved the Hornets to 10-5 in the MEAC (21-19 overall), while the Aggies fell to 8-7 (17-28 overall).
The Hornets spotted the Aggies eight runs as they scored four runs each in the top of the second and third innings for an 8-0 lead. The Hornets bats finally came alive as they scored a school record 14 runs in the bottom of the 3rd inning. Everybody contributed to the offensive power surge to help give the Hornets the 14-8 lead. With the Hornets batting order going around twice, Tom Shelly and Justin Bittner had three RBI’s, Wynton Weather, Jamie Friel and Justin Bittner had two RBI’s.
The Hornets didn’t score again until the 7th inning when Tom Shelly hit a RBI single to drive in Eric Allen.
The Aggies tried to make a comeback scattering two runs each in the sixth and seventh inning but it wasn’t quite enough.
Freshman center fielder CJ Beatty was big for the Aggies going three for five with two home runs. He hit a three run homer in the second, a solo homer in the sixth and a RBI single in the seventh.
The winning pitcher for the Hornets is Dan Perkins who came in to relieve starter Tony Tevis in the third inning. Justin Bittner is credited with the save, relieving Perkins in the seventh.
The next series for the Hornets is at Bethune Cookman the weekend of May 4.
