BALTIMORE – Yasmin Burrell connected for a three-run home run and
Emily Quintero threw a complete game from the circle, leading the Coppin State softball team to a 4-3 victory over Norfolk State on Sunday afternoon at CSU Softball Complex. The Eagles have now won six-straight games and completed a sweep of the Spartans (18-16, 8-7 MEAC) to improve to 8-17 overall and 7-8 in league play.
Burrell finished 2-for-2 with a home run and a double while
Julianna Mejia and
Brooklyn Lee-Scott added two hits apiece. Quintero allowed three runs while scattering eight hits and striking out one.
After a scoreless first, Quintero also got out of the second inning unscathed. Mejia and
Natasha Arroyo had back-to-back singles with one out and Burrell put the Eagles on top 3-0, taking the first pitch she saw deep over the left field fence.
The Spartans stranded a pair of runners in the third and Mejia made them pay with an RBI single to right in the bottom half, driving in
Giselle Ulloa who singled and stole second earlier in the frame.
Norfolk got on the board with a solo home run in the fourth and added two more in the fifth to cut Coppin's lead to 4-3. The Eagles threatened to add some insurance runs in the fifth but left the bases loaded but Quintero retired the side in the sixth and seventh to seal the win for the Navy & Gold.
Coppin returns to action on Wednesday, April 15 when it welcomes North Carolina A&T for a 1 pm doubleheader in its final home games of the season.
