BOSTON, Mass. – Behind victories by
Solomon Hammond in both the 60m and 200m dash, the Coppin State men's track & field team finished seventh in the team standings at the IC4A/ECAC Indoor Championships over the weekend at BU Track & Field Center.
A senior from Ghana, Hammond took the 60m crown in 6.70, ahead of teammate
Cole Schlotterbeck who finished sixth in 6.90. Hammond and Schlotterbeck won gold and silver, respectively, in the 200m dash in times of 21.18 and 21.25.
Freshman
Elijah Williams also medaled in the 60m hurdles, placing second in 8.06 which is the top freshman time in the MEAC this season. Williams also scored in the high jump, finishing eighth by clearing 1.88m (6-2), just behind teammate
Sean Williams in seventh (1.93m/6-4). Williams also leaped 6.63m (21-9) in the long jump to finish tenth overall.
Wrapping up the weekend, the quartet of
Godspower Iloba,
Timothy Frederick,
Etiam Torgbenu and
Asa Francis finished second in the 4x400m Relay in a season-best time of 3:13.69. This time ranks second in the MEAC this season.
Frederick and Torgbenu took seventh in their respective open events with Frederick clocking a 48.37 in the 400m and Torgbenu running a 1:53.21 in the 800m. Iloba also covered the 200m in 21.69 and the 400m in 48.83 while Francis crossed the finish of the 800m in 1:54.38.
Alexander Dobson-Honablue led a trio of Eagles in the triple jump, traveling 14.29m (46-10.75) to finish seventh overall.
Keyon Jackson and
Mandel Edelin also competed and jumped 13.70m (44-11.50) and 12.91m (42-4.25), each.
On the women's side,
Gifty Oku and
Kyah La Fortune tied for 12
th place, clocking in at 24.91. Oku finished just ahead of La Fortune in the 400m dash in 58.32 to 59.11.
In the 60m hurdles,
Karima Davenport-White finished in 9.37, just ahead of
Ariell Thomas (9.57) while
Zeana Bain jumped 5.12m (16-9.75) in the long jump.
The Eagles are expected to compete at the Indoor Pre-Nationals, held on February 13-14 at the Virginia Beach Sports Center.
