Eagles Tested Early, Come Up Short at Ranked NC State

RALEIGH, N.C. – In the first match of the season, North Carolina Central women's tennis fell 7-0 at No.11 NC State on Sunday afternoon. Four of the six singles matches featured nationally ranked players from the Wolfpack, as several Eagles were able to win games to extend sets.

In doubles competition, Alejandra Hidalgo Vega and Mariana Zottoli were up to the challenge against fourth-ranked Gabriella Broadfoot and Victoria Osuigwe. The pair of Eagles came up short, 6-3 in the No.1 slot.

Sara Barbaric and Valeria San Miguel Soria faced the 40th-ranked doubles team of Jasmine Conway and Anna Zyryanova, slipping 6-1 in No.2 Doubles. Patricia Palencia and Journee Henderson closed out competition in a 6-2 defeat against Mia Slama and Lavinia Tanasie.

Moving onto singles, Hidalgo Vega fell in two 6-2 sets to 29th-ranked Broadfoot. San Miguel Soria, Zottoli and Barbaric were also able to win multiple games before dropping two sets. Gabriela Mejia Arenas and Palencia also competed in singles play.

The Eagles have a quick turnaround, facing Iowa and No.8 Duke on Monday, Jan. 19. Both matches take place at Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center, hosted by the Blue Devils, starting with Iowa at 1 p.m. and Duke at 5.
