WASHINGTON, D.C. – Kyley Gary-Grayson scored a season-high 16 points as Coppin State's women's basketball team fell at George Washington, 63-49, on Sunday afternoon at the Charles E. Smith Center. The Eagles fell to 2-13 overall entering their MEAC opener next week while GW improved to 9-5 on the year.
A freshman from West Orange, N.J., Gary-Grayson hit 5-of-9 shots from the floor, including all three of her 3-pointers while making 3-of-5 free throws. Twelve of her 16 points came in the first half as she hit all four of her shot attempts.
Paris McBride also finished in double figures with 14 points and the senior from Richmond, Va., added four assists, a block and three steals. Also, contributing on the offensive end was
Skylar Barnes with six points. On the defensive end,
Shanaii Gamble led the way with a game-high eight rebounds to go with a block and four steals.
Coppin made just 26.4% of its shot from the floor, and despite making 17 free throws, shot just 58.6% from the line on 29 attempts. GW hit 38.8% from the field and 20-of-21 (95.2%) from the stripe.
The Eagles trailed, 18-11, after the first quarter, but Gary-Grayson led CSU on an 11-2 run with nine points over a 4:16 span. After her three cut the deficit to just 25-24 with 2:22 left in the half, GW scored four-straight points before her third triple of the quarter with 1:19 remaining.
GW opened the second half on a 10-1 run to extend its lead to double digits, but seven unanswered points by the Eagles cut the deficit to as little as 42-37 at the 2:02 mark. Barnes hit a jumper as time expired in the quarter as the Buff & Blue went into the fourth up, 50-40, and Coppin was only able to lower the margin to nine the rest of the way.
Coppin opens conference play on Saturday, January 3 at Delaware State in a 2 pm tipoff.
