INDIANAPOLIS – Coppin State's volleyball team will travel to Tempe, Ariz., to play #2 Arizona State in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament, it was revealed during the NCAA Selection Show on Sunday night. This marks the second NCAA Tournament appearance for the Eagles in the last three years.
Earning the MEAC's automatic qualifier after winning the conference tournament last weekend, Coppin State (23-11) is scheduled to play the Sun Devils (26-3), the Big 12 Champions at 9:00 pm ET on Thursday, December 4 at Desert Financial Arena. The other matchup in the bracket is No. 7 seed Tennessee against Utah State on Thursday at 6:30 pm, with all matches airing on ESPN+.
The Eagles are led by MEAC Player of the Year and Tournament Most Outstanding Performer
TaKenya Stafford who finished as one of the Nation's leaders with 22 double-doubles. A redshirt senior from Los Angeles, Calif., Stafford posted a CSU single-season record 486 kills (3.68/set) on .224 hitting to go with 2.64 digs/set and 44 blocks.
Stafford is joined the offensive end by MEAC Rookie of the Year
Cherisse Atilano (2.70 kills, 2.80 digs/set) and First Team middle blocker
Kayden Cupid (1.67 kills, .316 hitting, 99 blocks).
A trio of setters have helped Coppin to a school-record 1,665 kills (12.61/set) this season with each bringing their own unique skill set. Senior
Azul Pilahg has a team-high 498 assists (4.79/set) and 2.00 digs/set), followed closely by senior
Andrea Serrano with 4.59 assists/set, 30 aces and 1.65 digs/set. Redshirt freshman
Andrea Cintron adds height to the position and has totaled 3.86 assist/set to go with 27 aces, 42 kills and 13 blocks.
Junior
Coco Figueroa anchors the backrow with 590 digs (4.57/set) en route to being named MEAC Defensive Player of the Year. Redshirt senior
Ahzhi Coleman has recorded a career-high 70 blocks and ranks fourth in CSU history in the category.
Junior opposite Noemie Glover lit up the stat sheet in her first season in Tempe, leading the Sun Devils with 375 kills and is a semifinalist for the AVCA National Player of the Year.
Senior outside hitters Bailey Miller and Tatum Parrott provided the Sun Devils with stability and experience on the left side, as the two came into this season with over 2,000 combined kills. In the middle, the Sun Devils had two experienced players in Colby Neal and Ella Lomigora. Neal led the Big 12 in blocks with 162 while Lomigora was second on the team with 123.
Arizona State received consistency in the back court from sophomore libero Faith Frame who led the Sun Devils in digs and digs per set. The setting duties were split between senior Sydney Henry and redshirt sophomore Brynn Covell this season. Henry, a senior, led the Sun Devils in assists with 713 and was fourth on the team in digs. Covell, a redshirt sophomore was second on the team in assists with 447.
Tickets will go on sale to the general public on Monday, December 1. There is a Cyber Monday deal for $10 general admission tickets, which is just for the upper bowl (lower bowl is assigned seating).
