South Carolina State Dominates Singles, Doubles Finals Set at MEAC Tennis Invitational

CARY, N.C. – Day Two of the 2nd Annual Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Tennis Invitational featured thrilling men’s semifinal and quarterfinal action in both singles and doubles competition at Cary Tennis Park.

In men’s singles, South Carolina State secured both spots in the championship match. Mikalai Bankou earned a 6-2, 6-4 semifinal win over North Carolina Central’s Rodrigo Alves, while teammate Iliyas Maratuly defeated fellow Bulldog Bastian Zamora, 6-4, 7-5. Bankou and Maratuly will face off in an all–South Carolina State final on Saturday, Oct. 4, at 9 a.m.

Doubles play saw a competitive path to the finals. South Carolina State’s Bankou and Zamora advanced after defeating Howard’s Kaosie Nwokedi and Marcus Weekes in the quarterfinals, 7-5, 6-4, and then overpowering North Carolina Central’s Naresh Mithran Bharathy and Antoni Pankowski in the semifinals, 6-2, 6-2.

On the other side of the draw, NCCU’s Tim Kohl and Rodrigo Alves advanced with a 6-3, 6-1 quarterfinal win over Norfolk State’s Boris Lunin and Dominik Simunovic, followed by a narrow 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 semifinal victory over Howard’s Michael Major Jr. and Ethan Boswell.

The men’s doubles championship will feature South Carolina State’s Bankou and Zamora against NCCU’s Kohl and Alves.

Winners of both singles and doubles titles will earn the MEAC’s automatic qualifying spot in the ITA Conference Masters.
