Norfolk State Wins Fifth Straight MEAC Men’s Indoor Track & Field Title; Mathenge and Johnson Earn Top Honors

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va., Feb. 23, 2026 - Norfolk State University claimed their program’s fifth consecutive MEAC Men's Indoor Track & Field Championship Title on Monday evening at the Virginia Beach Sports Center.
The Norfolk State Spartans collected 124.5 team points to secure the 2026 MEAC title. Delaware State finished second with 106 team points, while South Carolina State placed third with 101 points.

Daniel Mathenge was named the 2026 MEAC Men’s Indoor Track and Field Outstanding Runner of the Meet after amassing 30 individual points. Christopher Johnson earned Outstanding Field Athlete honors with 20 points. Spartans head coach Kenneth Giles was named Outstanding Coach, capturing his 44th MEAC title as a head coach and further solidifying his distinction as the most decorated track and field head coach in conference history.

Norfolk State dominated the men’s competition as Kendrick Winfield captured gold on Monday in both the 400-meter dash (46.67) and the 200-meter dash (20.94), while Daniel Mathenge claimed the 5,000-meter title with a winning time of 14:42.69.

Mathenge set the tone early in the championships, earning the Spartans’ lone gold medal on Sunday with a victory in the 3,000 meters (8:17.37). He followed with a second-place finish in the mile run and capped the meet with a win in the 5,000 meters on Monday.

Christopher Johnson, a senior from Willingboro, New Jersey, earned Most Outstanding Field Athlete honors after placing second in the shot put on Sunday and winning gold in the men’s weight throw on Monday, helping lead Delaware State to a second-place team finish.

The top three finishers in each event were named All-MEAC.
