UMES freshmen duo prepare for NCAA East Region Championships
PRINCESS ANNE, Maryland - University of Maryland Eastern Shore freshmen Delano Lawrence and Yourie Lawrence-Clarke have qualified to compete in the NCAA Track & Field East Region Championships held this week at the Visit Jax Track At Hodges Stadium in Jacksonville, Florida.
The field for the NCAA First Round Sites (East and West) is determined by the top 48 declared individual athletes and the top 24 declared relay teams in each region. Qualifying to the NCAA Championships is then accomplished by finishing among the top 12 in individual and relay competitions in the region events. The 2025 NCAA National Championships will be held at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.
Lawrence, a freshman from Kingston, Jamaica, has posted the most successful discus season in UMES history. Lawrence picked up his fourth victory of the outdoor season in the discus at the MEAC Championships earlier this month with a throw of 52.61m to take the top spot on the podium. Lawrence qualified for the regionals with a season best mark of 55.62m set at the Penn Relays in April.
Lawrence-Clarke, who is also a freshman from Kingston, ran a personal best time of 13.75 in the 110 meter hurdles prelims at the MEAC Championships. Lawrence-Clarke finished in second in the 110H final with a pace of 13.76.
Competition in Jacksonville will open on Wednesday, May 28 starting at 10 AM with men's field and track events.
