DURHAM, N.C. - Kyle Serba, a legendary sports information director at North Carolina Central, was inducted into the 2025 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) John B. McLendon Hall of Fame on Friday morning (Feb. 28).
The induction ceremony was held at the Baltimore Convention Center during the week of the CIAA Basketball Tournament in Baltimore, Md. Serba was part of an eight-member induction class.
Serba was a promoter extraordinaire for 29 years at North Carolina Central, first as sports information director and later as Deputy Athletics Director of External Affairs.
"Kyle was an integral part of NCCU Athletics," NCCU Director of Athletics Dr. Louis "Skip" Perkins said. "Every student-athlete was impacted by him in an incredibly positive way. He was monumental in helping shape the NCCU Athletics brand. The CIAA Hall of Fame honor is well deserved."
His impact was felt immediately upon his arrival at NCCU in 1994. In his third year at NCCU, Serba was selected CIAA Sports Information Director of the Year. Serba won the award four times (1997, 1999, 2000, 2006) which is the most of any SID since 1994, according to the CIAA website.
The awards were especially gratifying for Serba since his peers in the conference voted on the prestigious honor. Serba is highly regarded in the athletic communications profession. He is a mentor to both numerous colleagues and rising communicators.
A native of Clifton Park, N.Y., Serba was President of the CIAA-Sports Information Directors Association for four years and was selected President-Elect and later President of the North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association (NCCSIA). He also was a CoSIDA National Publications Contest Award winner.
The fact that Serba was enshrined into the NCCU Alex M. Rivera Athletics Hall of Fame in 2006 during his tenure tells you what the university, especially the athletic department, thought of him as well. He displayed commitment, professionalism and longevity in promoting NCCU athletics during the NCAA Division II era in the CIAA and later as a Division I program in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC).
During his time as sports information director, Serba coordinated the media relations, advertising, marketing and promotions efforts in athletics. He was the sports editor of the student newspaper and a sports broadcaster for the student radio station.
Due to his exceptional work as SID, Serba was elevated to the role of Deputy Athletics Director for External Affairs while maintaining his duties as Director of Strategic Communications. As Deputy Athletics Director, Serba oversaw many areas including strategic communications, marketing, corporate sponsorships, facilities, game operations, ticket operations, licensing and branding, NIL, letterwinners club, hall of fame and special events.
One of his biggest highlights at NCCU was an on-field presentation - led by three former Eagle football student-athletes - of the newly created Kyle Serba Endowed Scholarship in 2021. The presentation was held during halftime of a football game, and it literally caught Serba by surprise. One of the former student-athletes – Malcolm Bell – dubbed Serba "The Superman of SIDs!"
After his invaluable service at NCCU, Serba became the Executive Director of Communications for the nationally renowned Duke men's basketball program in November of 2023.
