VIRGINIA BEACH, Va., Feb. 23, 2025-- The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) kicked off its 2025 Indoor Track & Field Championships on Sunday morning at the Virginia Beach Sports Center, with the defending men's and women's champions already leading the standings.
Howard, the defending women's champion, hold a 16-point lead over second place Norfolk State in the team standings, 59 to 43, with just five events scored. Morgan State ranks third on the leaderboard with 35 points.
On the men's side, defending champion Norfolk State leads with 58 points, while Delaware State sits in second with 42 points.
Joslyn Crosby of Howard secured victory in the first final event of the day, winning the women's 3,000-meter race with a time of 10:18.51. In the men's 3,000-meter final, Victor Jumo of Norfolk State claimed gold, clocking an impressive 8:20.91 time.
Norfolk State continued its success as Leslie Young took home gold in the women's weight throw with a top mark of 17.60 meters. Meanwhile, Nathan Wade of Maryland Eastern Shore soared into first place with a 7.46-meter leap to win the men's long jump.
A historic moment came in the men's pole vault, where Michael Hopkins of South Carolina State shattered the championship record with a vault of 5.06 meters, surpassing the previous mark of 5.00 meters set by Shane Smith of Coppin State in 2009.
In the men's shot put, Zackery Dillon of Morgan State claimed gold with a throw of 16.48 meters, while Jonathan Raijon-Koger of North Carolina Central cleared 2.05 meters to clinch the top spot in the men's high jump.
In the women's long jump, Tia Jackson of Morgan State matched her season-best leap of 5.95 meters to secure gold, edging out Ija Mumford of Howard, who finished with a best jump of 5.77 meters.
In the final events of the day, Howard University dominated the women's DMR, securing gold with a time of 12:07.17. In the men's DMR final, Delaware State emerged victorious, clocking in with a 10:13.43 time.
Monday's events begin at 8:30 a.m. with the men's heptathlon. Finals start at 10:00 a.m. with the men's weight throw, followed by the women's triple jump at 11:00 a.m. The championship day concludes with the women's 4x400 race at 3:20 p.m., followed by the men's 4x400 race at 3:30 p.m. All events will be streamed live on ESPN+.
