MEAC Announces Weekly Women’s Track & Field Honors

NORFOLK, Va., Jan. 31, 2025-- North Carolina Central Sophomore Melanne Sutton was selected as Women's Track Athlete of the Week, presented by Coca-Cola. South Carolina State Senior Jourdon Cooper earned Women's Field Athlete of the Week honors.   

Sutton (So., Greenville, N.C.) finished first in both the 60-meter and 200-meter at the JDL Flat Is Fast Invitational, setting a personal record of 7.49 in the 60m and finishing the 200m in 25.58. 

Cooper (Sr., Moncks Corner, S.C.) claimed gold in the Pentathlon at the RADD College Invitational with 3050 points, the top mark in the MEAC this season, which ranks 21st nationally. In the Pentathlon, Cooper finished third in the high jump with a leap of 1.53 meters, ninth in the shot put with a throw of 8.49 meters, sixth in the long jump at 5.03 meters, sixth in the 800m with a time of 2:39.78, and fourth in the 60m hurdles. 

Other Top Performers 

  • Kailei Collins (HU) secured second place in the 60m at the Penn 10 Elite with a MEAC-best time of 7.46. 

  • Kendra Ezeama (HU) set a new school record and recorded the MEAC’s season-best shot-put mark (14.62m) at the Penn 10 Elite, finishing fifth. 

  • Tia Jackson (MSU) claimed victory in the long jump with a leap of 5.88m while also finishing tied for 12th in the high jump at the UMass Lowell Riverhawk Invitational.  

  • Sa’Niya Fowler (NCCU) won the weight throw with a throw of 16.43m and placed second in shot put (13.62m) at the JDL Flat Is Fast Invitational. 

  • Angelica Frederick (SCSU) placed second in the 300m with a time of 39.75 at the RADD College Invitational.
