MEAC Announces Weekly Men’s Track & Field Honors

NORFOLK, Va., Jan. 15, 2025 -- Howard graduate student Zachary Hawkins was named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Men’s Track Athlete of the Week, presented by Coca-Cola. Norfolk State senior Issac Haywood was named Men’s Field Athlete of the Week.  

Hawkins (Gr., Lithonia, Ga.) finished second in the 60-meter hurdles at the Rod McCravy Invite, recording a MEAC-best time of 7.87, ranking 21st nationally.  

Haywood (Sr., Louisa, Va.) delivered an exceptional performance for the Spartans at the VCU Rams Indoor Invite, winning the triple jump with a mark of 15.13 meters and finishing second in the long jump with a leap of 7.19 meters, competing against 15 teams.   

Other Top Performers

  • Andrew Betton (CSU) earned seventh place in the high jump for the Eagles at the Gamecock Opener. 

  • Solomon Hammond (CSU) finished second in the 60m dash with a time of 6.71, ranking him 27th nationally. 

  • Christopher Johnson (DSU) won the shot put with a mark of 16.17 meters for Delaware State University, which ranks first in the MEAC. 

  • Chase Drewery (HU) earned sixth place in the triple jump at the Rod McCravy Invite, with a leap of 15.10 meters (49’6.5”), ranking second in the MEAC and 24th nationally. 

  • Jahquan Christopher (NSU) won the 500m race with a personal best time of 1:04.31 while finishing second in the 4x400 relay with a time of 3:13.52 at the VCU Rams Indoor Invitational. 

  • Michael Hopkins (SCSU) claimed victory in the pole vault at the Gamecock Opener, clearing 4.75m (15-07 ft.) and setting a new personal record.
