Hammond, Adekoya Run Top Times in the MEAC at South Carolina Challenge

COLUMBIA, S.C. – After a month layoff, the Coppin State men’s track & field team returned to action and got several notable performances across various events at the Gamecock Opener over the weekend.

Solomon Hammond was the top collegiate finisher in the 60m dash, finishing second overall in 6.71 which is the top time in the MEAC this season and just outside the top 25 nationally. 

Earlier in the day, Hammond clocked a 6.79 in the prelims and a 6.78 in the semifinals, just behind Chris Adekoya in 6.77.  Adekoya now ranks second in the MEAC while Cole Schlotterbeck sits fourth after running a 6.88 in the final. Schlotterbeck doubled up in the 200m, finishing in 22.37.

Jayeed Norbal and Etiam Torgbenu finished second and fourth, respectively, in the 600m dash, running times of 1:20.00 and 1:20.26.

Jarrett Gentles ran without competition in his section of the 400m dash and covered the distance in 48.69 to finish eighth overall.

Andrew Betton also doubled up in his events, taking seventh in the high jump by clearing 1.95m (6’ 4.75”) while advancing to the semifinals of the 60m hurdles in 8.66. Betton currently ranks third in the MEAC in the high jump

Humed Nura finished the 3,000m in 9:06.96.

Coppin returns to the track on Saturday, January 18 for the KPMG HBCU Showcase, held at the Nike Track & Field Center at The Armory in New York City.
