ORANGEBURG, SC -- The South Carolina State track and field teams will resume their schedule Saturday at the USC Opener, hosted by the University of South Carolina at its Indoor Track Facility. The meet is the second of the 2024-2025 campaign for Coach Donald Cooper’s teams, which opened the indoor season Dec. 5 at the Liberty Kickoff in Lynchburg, VA. Approximately 22 schools are scheduled to participate Saturday.
Cooper, in his 3rd season at the helm of the track & field program at SC State -- his alma mater -- said the men will be paced by Jr. Javon Brooks (200m), the reigning MEAC 400m outdoor champion, who will focus more on the 200m indoors this season; Sr. Jalen Alleyne (60m), an indoor finalist in the 60m at the MEAC Championship last season ; and on the women’s side, Sr. Angelica Frederick (200m), runner-up in the MEAC outdoor 400m, who just missed the making the MEAC 200m final last year; and Jr. Kennedy Spears (HJ), the reigning MEAC outdoor champion in the high jump, who is looking to improve her performance in the indoor event.
Following Saturday’s participation at USC, SC State will compete at the RADD Sports "College Invitational"/Multi Jan. 24-25 in Gainesville, FL before returning to Columbia, SC for events in the Carolina Invitational on Feb.1 and USC Indoor Open on Feb. 15. Prior to closing out the regular season at USC, SC State returns to Lynchburg, VA for a meet at the Darius Dixon Memorial Invitational Feb.7-8. The 2025 MEAC Indoor Championships will be held Feb. 23-24 in Virigina Beach, VA, followed by the NCAA Indoor Championships Mar. 13-14 at location TBA.
