MEAC Announces Weekly Women’s Track & Field Honors

NORFOLK, Va., Dec. 11, 2024 — North Carolina Central sophomore Melannie Sutton was selected as Women’s Track Athlete of the Week, presented by Coca-Cola. Teammate Tia Lucas earned Women’s Field Athlete of the Week honors.

Sutton (So., Greenville, N.C.) won the 60m dash event with a new personal best time of 7.52. She also raced in the 4x400m helping NC Central finish second.

Lucas (Sr., James Island, S.C.) earned a first place finish for her performance in the high jump clearing 1.69m for the victory against 23 opponents.

Other Top Performers  
  • Kyah La’Fortune (CSU) placed fourth in 300m (39.23) at Youree Spence-Garcia Invite & ran a leg of the 4x400 team that took fourth in 3:54.48.  
  • Lyee Simms (UMES) collected silver in the high jump (1.60m) and finished just outside the top five (sixth) in the 60m hurdles (9.17) at the Navy Invitational.  
  • Kandynce Taylor (NSU) finished second in the women’s 500m race (1:15.41) at the Liberty Kickoff Meet. 
  • Leslie Young (NSU) registered a third place finish in the women’s weight throw (55’ 4.5”) and fourth in the shot put (41’ 9.5”)at the Liberty Kickoff Meet.
