MEAC Announces Weekly Men’s Track & Field Honors

NORFOLK, Va., Dec. 11, 2024 — Coppin State sophomore Asa Francis was named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Men’s Track Athlete of the Week, presented by Coca-Cola. Norfolk State senior Issac Haywood was named Men’s Field Athlete of the Week. 

Francis (So., Castries, Saint Lucia) delivered an exceptional performance at the Youree Spence-Garcia Invitational. Francis claimed first place in the 1,000m race with a time of 2:30.36. He also helped the Eagles claim gold in the 4x400m relay race recording a time of 3:18.12. 

Haywood (Sr., Louisa, Va.) won the men’s triple jump with a leap of 15.17m leading a pack of 22 competitors. Haywood also placed second of 30 competitors in the long jump finishing with a leap of 7.19m at the Liberty Kickoff Meet.   

Other Top Performers  

  • Andrew Betton (CSU) placed second in high jump (1.93m), seventh in long jump (6.40m) and first in 60m hurdles (8.64) at Youree Spence-Garcia Invite.

  • Nathan Wade (UMES) claimed first place in the triple jump with a 14.75m leap.  Wade also helped the Hawks 4x400m relay team to a second-place finish (3:22.52) at the Navy Invitational. 

  • Jadon Ra-Akbar (MSU) placed 3rd with a time of 8.14 in the 60M hurdles. Ra-Akbar also added a second place finish in the long jump with a leap of 7.02 meters. 

  • Brian Rotich (NSU) placed 124th with a time of 14:07.14 to break the school record in the men’s 5K at the BU Sharon Colyer-Danville Season Opener. 

  • Jonathan Raijon-Koger (NCCU) opened the indoor season competing in the three jumping events, finishing first in the high jump. His leap of 1.99m earned the gold. Raijon-Koger also placed 10th in the long jump at 6.62m.
