NORFOLK, Va., May 9, 2023 – Tuesday was the opening day of the 2023 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Outdoor Track & Field Championships, hosted by Norfolk State University, at Dick Price Stadium.
Through three scored events, Morgan State leads the women’s team standings with 32 points. Norfolk State and defending champion Howard are tied for second with 20.5 points, while North Carolina Central sits in fourth with 15.5.
On the men’s side, defending champion Norfolk State leads the way with 34.5 points. North Carolina Central is second with 29, followed by Delaware State in third with 19.
The first gold medal of the championship came courtesy of Delaware State’s Emperor Campbell, who took the men’s discus throw with a MEAC season-best mark of 50.92 meters (167 feet, 1 inch). He’s the first MEAC thrower to eclipse the 50-meter mark this season.
Johnelle Johnson of Morgan State, the MEAC’s best in the event this season, defended her title in the women’s discus, recording a distance of 46.68 meters (153 feet, 2 inches).
Tia Lucas of North Carolina Central narrowly took the women’s high jump title over Morgan State’s Tia Jackson; both athletes cleared the bar at a MEAC season-best 1.68 meters (5 feet, 6 inches), with the tiebreaker going to Lucas because she missed on fewer attempts.
The Eagles swept the high jump titles, as Lamont Victoria took the men’s gold medal, clearing the bar at a MEAC season-best 2.11 meters (6 feet, 11 inches).
Norfolk State’s Mercyline Kimaiyo dominated the women’s 10,000 meters, winning by just over three minutes and turning in a 37:09.91. Gidion Sigei made it a Spartans sweep, taking the men’s race after running a 32:22.78. Norfolk State swept the podium in the men’s race, with Victor Jumo (32:56.23) second and Brian Rotich (32:57.85) third.
Through five events in the men’s decathlon, Howard’s Eric Brown leads the way with 3,469 points, 243 points ahead of Norfolk State’s Rayquan Smith. Coppin State’s Amari Goode is currently third in the decathlon standings with 3,048 points, seven clear of Norfolk State’s Sadiq Nurse.
In the women’s heptathlon, Delaware State’s Catherine Glenn leads the way with 3,143 points through four events. The Bison are in second and third, with Jasmyn Hunter (2,994) and Leah Williams-White (2,851), respectively.
Howard’s Jessica Wright posted the top time in the preliminary heats for the women’s 400-meter hurdles, clocking in at 59.38 to win her heat and post the lone sub-minute time in the field. In all, the Bison will have four of the eight finalists, with Cathrina Morris (1:00.08), Aniya Woodruff (1:02.12) and Monika Williams (1:02.13) also qualifying.
Delaware State’s Alonzo Sims, Jr., had the men’s top time in the 400-meter hurdles, winning his preliminary heat in 53.17. Kameron Davis of Howard, who owns the MEAC’s top time in the event this season, was second-fastest with a 54.01.
Coppin State’s Latifa Ali ran a 24.01 to post the fastest time in the women’s 200 meter preliminaries. Howard placed five finalists in the field, paced by Tiffani Rae Pittman, who had the second-fastest time with a 24.10.
In the men’s 200 meters, Norfolk State’s Kai Cole was the fastest in the prelims, clocking in at 21.03. Howard’s Ashton Daniel was second quickest with a 21.07.
Wednesday’s action gets underway at 9 a.m., with the conclusion of both the men’s decathlon and women’s heptathlon. Further action starts at 11:30 a.m., with the women’s long jump and women’s shot put.
