NORFOLK, Va., May 10, 2023 – After the second day of the 2023 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Wednesday at Norfolk State’s Dick Price Stadium, with the Morgan State women and Norfolk State men leading the way.
Through eight scored events, Morgan State leads the women’s team standings with 83 points, while defending champion Howard is second with 70.5 points. Norfolk State (48.5), Delaware State (38.5) and North Carolina Central (29.5) round out the top five.
On the men’s side, the defending champion Spartans are in the lead with 67.5 points, just six points ahead of second-place Howard. Rounding out the top five are North Carolina Central (56), Delaware State (42) and Maryland Eastern Shore (23).
Catherine Glenn of Delaware State won the first gold medal of the day – and the Hornets’ second of the championship – taking the women’s heptathlon with 5,011 points. She was just 27 points shy of the meet record (Khemani Roberts, Coppin State in 2017).
Howard’s Jasmyn Hunter (4,547) and Morgan State’s Makenzie Harris (4,501) also medaled in the heptathlon.
Eric Brown of Howard tallied 5,903 points to win the men’s decathlon; Coppin State’s Amari Goode was second with 5,513.
Terine Lambert of Morgan State, who on Tuesday came in second in the discus, won the MEAC title in the women’s shot put on Wednesday with a MEAC season-best mark of 13.94 meters (45 feet, 9 inches). The Bears’ John Purvis took the men’s shot put title at a MEAC-best 16.81 meters (55 feet, 2 inches).
The men’s long jump went to Sean Wray of Howard, who bested teammate Kyle Fisher by .01 meters. Wray claimed gold with a distance of 7.16 meters (23 feet, 6 inches), while Fisher was at 7.15 meters (23 feet, 5.5 inches). Erick Hill of South Carolina State leapt 7.00 meters (22 feet, 11.75 inches) to come in third.
Howard also went 1-2 in the women’s hammer throw, with Erin Hatcher taking gold at a meet-record 55.64 meters (182 feet, 10 inches) and Mikyla Rodgers earning silver with a mark of 53.99 meters (177 feet, 1 inch).
Maryland Eastern Shore’s James Perkins won the men’s hammer throw, tossing a MEAC season-best 53.90 meters (176 feet, 10 inches).
Morgan State also won gold in the women’s long jump, as Tia Jackson won the event for the second straight season. She leaped 6.04 meters (19 feet, 9.75 inches), the only athlete to clear six meters, in claiming the gold medal.
Norfolk State’s Mercyline Kimaiyo won another gold medal on Wednesday, taking the women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11:08.22. She had previously won the 10,000 meters on Tuesday.
In the men’s steeplechase, Regan Kimtai gave the Spartans the sweep, winning gold in 9:27.15.
Howard has six of the eight finalists for the women’s 100-meter hurdles after Wednesday’s preliminary heats. Darci Khan posted the fastest time with a 13.26, while Kaya-Rae Dunbar was second-quickest after turning in a 13.40. The men’s 110-meter hurdles saw four Howard runners advance to the final, with Dylan Beard the fastest in a meet-record 13.43.
Coppin State placed three runners in the women’s 400-meter finals after Latifa Ali (53.72), Kimani Alphonse (54.92) and Shenelle Tomlinson (55.08) posted the three fastest times in the preliminary heats.
In the 100 meters, the women’s preliminaries saw Howard place four in the final; the Bison had the three fastest times, with Darci Khan leading the way with an 11.47. Lamaria Washington (11.61) and Tiffani Rae Pittman (11.67) were also quick.
The men’s 100 meters saw Ashton Daniel (10.29) and Dylan Beard (10.44) post the first- and third-fastest times for Howard, while Norfolk State’s Kai Cole was second-qucikest with a 10.36.
Howard’s Melanie White posted the fastest time in the preliminaries of the women’s 800 meters, clocking in at 2:12.78. In the men’s 800, Coppin State’s Amadou Ba was fastest with a 1:52.84, followed by Norfolk State’s Regan Kimtai with a 1:53.09.
Thursday’s action will get underway at 10 a.m. with the women’s pole vault, women’s javelin and men’s triple jump. Running events start at 1 p.m. with the women’s 4x100-meter relay. The entire day’s action will be streamed live on ESPN+.
