Records Fall for Norfolk State at Raleigh Relays

RALEIGH, N.C. -- 
The Norfolk State men's and women's track & field teams opened the 2023 outdoor season over the weekend at the Raleigh Relays, hosted by N.C. State.
 
Gidion Sigei shattered a school record in the 10,000 meters, previously held by Anteneh Girma at the 2015 Colonial Relays (30:11.40). Sigei finished the race in 29:34.41 on Friday to earn 41st in a talented field.

Mercyline Kimaiyo took 48th amongst some of the nation's best distance runners in the women's 10,000 meters, finishing in 36:39.16. The mark broke NSU's program record of 36:51.77, set by Rachel Webb in 2016.

Howard's Wright Leads in the Way in Raleigh

RALEIGH, N.C. -- 
Howard University senior Jessica Wright led the way at the annual Raleigh Relays, hosted by North Carolina State University.
 
The All-American returned to the Tar Heel state, where she won the 400-meter dash with a 52.76 time.
 
Sophomore Lamaria Washington finished runner-up in the 100-meter dash (11.48), while fellow classmate Tiffani-Rae Pittman claimed third overall in the 200-meter dash (23.55).

Coppin's Ali Wins 400 Meters, Leads 4x100 at Weems Baskin

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- 
Latifa Ali won the 400-meter dash and led the 4x100-meter relay team to a school record as Coppin State's women's track & field team opened its outdoor season this weekend at the Weems Baskin Relays, hosted by University of South Carolina.
 
A junior from Kumasi, Ghana, Ali cruised to victory in the 400 meters with a time of 53.19, besting teammate Kimani Alphonse, who took second in a personal-record 53.88, which is the fourth-fastest in school history. The duo ran the last two legs of the 4x100, following Gifty Oku and Halutie Hor, that took third overall in 45.14, shattering a school record by over six-tenths of a second.
 
Hor and Oku also placed seventh and eighth, respectively, in the 100-meter dash in times of 11.93 and 11.98.

Morgan State Strong at Weems Baskin Relays

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- 
The Morgan State women's outdoor track & field team competed at the 2023 Weems Baskin Relays this weekend at the Sheila and Morris Cregger Track hosted by the University of South Carolina. The meet began Friday and concluded Saturday afternoon.
 
The Lady Bears would finish with six top-10 finishes, including two individual champions in Rachel Field in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and Tia Jackson in the long jump.

The men's team recorded four top-10s.

Carter Best for NCCU at Raleigh Relays

RALEIGH, N.C. -- 
North Carolina Central senior Donnell Carter ran the fastest 400-meter dash of his career to earn second place at the Raleigh Relays, hosted by N.C. State University on Thursday through Saturday at the Paul Derr Track and Field Facility.

Carter completed the lap around the track in 46.91 seconds, less than four-tenths of a second behind event winner Nickolis Anderson (46.59) of UNC Wilmington.

Other top finishers for NCCU were Joidon Boddie, who placed fifth in the women's triple jump with a distance of 12.56 meters, and Lamont Victoria, who tied for eighth place in the men's high jump with a leap of 2.01 meters.

S.C. State Records Four Top-5s, Seven Top-10s at Weems Baskin

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- 
The South Carolina State track & field teams combined for four top-5, seven top-10 finishes, and two personal records at the Weems Baskins Invitational, hosted by the University of South Carolina. A total of 35 teams participated in the event.

Earning top five finishes for S.C. State were Mekhi Bosket, second in the high jump (1.84m, 6-0.75 ft.); the 4x100-meter "A" relay team of Waddell Rembert-Jett, Kris Brown, Erick Hill and Dwayne Curnell, fourth (40.62); the 4x400m relay team of Jaden Barker, Brown, Rembert-Jett and Curnell, fifth (3:17.99); and the women's 4x800-meter relay team of Debrielle Williams, Makayla Jones, MaKylah Jones and Jada Banks, third (9:48.60).

UMES Wraps Up Stacked Weems Baskin Relays

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- 
Maryland Eastern Shore track & field competed in one of their biggest meets of the season at the Weems Baskin Relays over the weekend at the University of South Carolina starting on Friday.
 
Janoi Brown was the top finisher for the Hawks, taking second in the 200 meters with a 21.12 run in a stacked field that compiled of runners from Coastal Carolina, South Carolina and North Carolina A&T. It was also a personal record.
 
During the men's 400 meters, Brown took second with Ashane Beckford behind in fourth, running 47.76 and 47.96, respectively.

Delaware State Competes in Weems Baskin Relays

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- 
The Delaware State men's and women's track & field teams closed out the Weems Baskin Invitational hosted by University of South Carolina on Saturday.
 
With two individual top-five finishers and one top-five team finish, the men's team was led by Tayshaun Chisholm, Andre Carr, Jr. and the 4x100-meter relay team.
 
Chisholm claimed fourth place in the 110-meter hurdles with a final time of 14.00 seconds, while Carr, Jr. took fifth place in the 100 meters with a time of 10.66 seconds.
