MEAC Announces Weekly Track & Field Honors, presented by Coca-Cola

NORFOLK, Va., Feb. 8, 2023Howard University senior Jermaine Byrd was named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Men’s Track Athlete of the Week, presented by Coca-Cola and Howard University junior Darci Khan was selected as Women’s Track Athlete of the Week, the conference office announced today. Norfolk State sophomore Kalon Jeffrey was named Men’s Field Athlete of the Week, while Morgan State junior Tia Jackson earned Women’s Field Athlete of the Week honors.
 
Byrd (Sr., Miami, Fla.) ranks 63rd in the nation in the men’s 60-meter hurdles after running a 7.91 in the preliminary round at the Doc Hale Virginia Tech Invite – the fastest time among collegiate runners in the event. He then ran a 7.93 to finish third in the final, second among collegiate athletes.
 
Khan (Jr., Stockbridge, Ga.) won the women’s 60-meter hurdles at the Doc Hale Virginia Tech Invite, breaking the program record and setting the nation’s 26th-fastest time with a MEAC-best 8.22 in the final.
 
Jeffrey (So., Chesapeake, Va.) won the men’s pole vault at the East Coast Invitational, clearing the bar at 4.09 meters (13 feet, 5 inches), currently the second-best mark in the conference.
 
Jackson (Jr., Bristol, United Kingdom) won the women’s long jump at the Sykes & Sabock Invitational this past weekend, breaking the program record with a personal-best leap of 6.06 meters (19 feet, 10.75 inches), the best mark in the conference this season.
 
Other Top Performers
Latifa Ali (Coppin State) won the women’s 400 meters at the Scarlet & White Invitational in 53.50, ranking 29th in the nation.
 
James Bell (Coppin State) leaped 2.00 meters in the men’s high jump at the Scarlet & White Invitational, coming in fourth.
 
Noxroy Wright (Coppin State) was fifth in the men’s 200 meters at the Scarlet & White Invitational, running a MEAC-best 21.27.
 
Annalise Bond (Delaware State) won the women’s pole vault at the Scarlet Knights Open with a MEAC-best height of 3.53 meters.
 
Catherine Glenn (Delaware State) won the women’s 60-meter hurdles at the Scarlet Knights Open in 8.53 seconds.
 
Jaden Shelton (Delaware State) helped the Hornets win the men’s 4x200-meter relay with a time of 1:27.58.
 
Rahkeem Smith (Delaware State) won the men’s long jump at the Scarlet Knights Open after leaping 7.02 meters.
 
Kyle Fisher (Howard) was fifth in the men’s triple jump at Virginia Tech, leaping 14.77 meters.
 
Ashane Beckford (Maryland Eastern Shore) ran a 48.42 in the women’s 400 meters to win the event at the East Coast Invitational.
 
Mackenzi Evans (Maryland Eastern Shore) won the women’s 200 meters (25.76) and 400 meters (59.87) at the East Coast Invitational.
 
James Perkins (Maryland Eastern Shore) won the men’s shot put at the East Coast Invitational with a distance of 14.93 meters.
 
Yasmine George (Morgan State) was third in the women’s 400 meters at the Sykes & Sabock Invitational, running a 58.12.
 
Duane Kizer (Morgan State) was second in the men’s 60-meter hurdles, running an 8.30 at the Sykes & Sabock Invitational.
 
Anthony Franklin (Norfolk State) won the men’s 60 meters at the East Coast Invitational, setting a new facility record with a 6.83.
 
Kara Grant (Norfolk State) won the women’s 800 meters (2:15.21) and mile run (5:20.61) at the East Coast Invitational.
 
Indya Richards (Norfolk State) won both the women’s 60 meters (7.75) and long jump (5.50 meters) at the East Coast Invitational.
 
Joidon Boddie (North Carolina Central) leaped 12.19 meters to win the women’s triple jump at the Richard Drake Invitational.
 
Christopher Rollinson (North Carolina Central) ran an 8.34 in the men’s 60-meter hurdles to win the event at the Richard Drake Invitational.
 
Lamont Victoria (North Carolina Central) won his third gold medal in the men’s high jump on the season, clearing 2.05 meters at the Richard Drake Invitational.
 
Summer Washington (North Carolina Central) won the women’s 60-meter hurdles in 8.92 at the Richard Drake Invitational.
