VIRGINIA BEACH, Va., Feb. 21, 2023 – The Norfolk State men won the 2023 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Indoor Track & Field Championship on Tuesday at the Virginia Beach Sports Center, using a strong final day to win the hardware for the second straight year.
On top of this being back-to-back indoor titles for the Spartans, it’s their 12
th overall.
Norfolk State finished the meet with 180 points, while second-place Howard had 109. Delaware State came in third in the team standings with 80 points, while Coppin State was close behind in fourth with 76.
The Spartans’ Kenneth Giles was named the meet’s Outstanding Coach.
Kai Cole gave the Spartans a pair of gold medals on Tuesday, winning both the 60 meters and 200 meters in thrilling fashion. He ran a 6.74 in winning the 60, edging out South Carolina State’s Kristopher Brown by .04 seconds, and his 21.09 in the 200 eclipsed Coppin State’s Noxroy Wright by 0.13 seconds.
Regan Kimtai gave Norfolk State its first gold medal of the day in winning the mile run, clocking in at 4:14.57, while Gidion Sigei added the 3,000 meters to his resume with an 8:34.60. Sigei, the reigning MEAC individual champion in cross country, also won gold earlier in this meet in the 5,000 meters.
Sigei and Kimtai were named the meet’s Outstanding Runners.
Isaac Haywood gave the Spartans a gold medal in field competition on Tuesday as well, as he leapt 15.25 meters (50 feet, 0.5 inches) to edge out North Carolina Central’s Jaelyn Blanc (the meet’s Outstanding Field Performer) by .02 meters in the men’s triple jump.
Amadou Ba of Coppin State won the 800 meters in 1:52.57, and Ba was also on the Eagles’ 4x400-meter relay squad (along with Wright, Rashaun Stewart and Daniel Cunningham) that won gold with a time of 3:14.25.
Maryland Eastern Shore’s Janoi Brown ran a 47.56 to take the 400 meters. Delaware State surprised in the 60-meter hurdles, as Tayshaun Chisholm ran a 7.81 to edge past Howard’s Jermanie Byrd (7.84).
The Hornets also got a gold medal in field action from Peter Jamanu, who gave Delaware State a sweep of the pole vault events after clearing 4.50 meters.
Morgan State’s John Purvis won the shot put with a distance of 16.52 meters, the winning distance just .01 meters ahead of second-place Christopher Johnson of Delaware State.
The top three finishers in each event were named All-MEAC.

About the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference
The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) is in its 52
nd year of intercollegiate competition with the 2022-23 academic school year. Located in Norfolk, Va., the MEAC is made up of eight outstanding historically black institutions across the Atlantic coastline: Coppin State University, Delaware State University, Howard University, University of Maryland Eastern Shore, Morgan State University, Norfolk State University, North Carolina Central University and South Carolina State University.
