NORFOLK, Va. – Legendary Norfolk State figure Marty Miller will receive his 11
th hall of fame induction in February, and this one just might be the most special of them all.
Miller will be one of 12 inductees in the 2023 College Baseball Hall of Fame Class, the College Baseball Foundation announced on Thursday morning.
The class is comprised of players, coaches, umpires, and administrators – all who have contributed to college baseball history at the NCAA, NAIA, and NJCAA levels. Ballot-eligible coaches must be retired for two years or be active and no less than 75 years old.
"Each year when the College Baseball Hall of Fame inductees are announced, it creates a tremendous level of pride and appreciation for those that have given so much to the college game," said Craig Ramsey, Chair of the College Baseball Foundation Board of Directors. "Inducting the newest Hall of Fame members and celebrating top performers from this past year will officially close out the achievements of the 2023 season. Then we will eagerly turn the page to the start of the 2024 college baseball season the very next day."
Miller spent 32 years as the head coach of Norfolk State's baseball program, amassing a 718-543-3 overall record to become the winningest coach in CIAA history. He won 15 CIAA Coach of the Year awards and led the Spartans to 17 conference titles, including a stretch of eight consecutive championships.
"I just want to say that this is awesome and unbelievable," Miller said. "For me, it feels like I have achieved the impossible dream because for a college baseball player and coach, this award is the college baseball Cooperstown."
Miller produced six All-Americans during his time as Norfolk State's head coach, with 22 of his former players signing pro contracts. From 1991-96, Miller's teams compiled a 92-12 record in league play (.885 win percentage).
Just a year after earning his 700
th win in 2003, Miller retired from coaching to take over as Director of Athletics at Norfolk State University, leading the department for 15 years. Serving the longest tenure of any AD in Spartan history, NSU won 26 MEAC team championships during his time at the helm and saw its graduation success rate rise from 40% to 75%.
