Spartans Dominate Cedric Walker HBCU XC Challenge as Kimaiyo Takes Individual Title

CARY, N.C. – Norfolk State junior Mercyline Kimaiyo won the individual title at the Cedric Walker HBCU XC Challenge on Friday evening at the WakeMed Soccer Park, leading the Spartans to first place in the team standings.
 
All five Spartan scorers finished in the top 15 slots of the event, amassing just 38 points towards NSU's total. Norfolk State finished 13 points ahead of runner up Fayetteville State (51), and 27 points in front of third-place North Carolina A&T State (65).
 
Kimaiyo completed the 5k course in 18 minutes, 51.6 seconds, 26 seconds ahead of the next runner. Kara Grant placed sixth for the Spartans with a time of 19:33.1.
 
Jahmei Wyatt (19:44.7) and Ludjenie Mondesir (19:46.6) took eighth and ninth, respectively, to round out NSU's four top-ten finishers. Freshman Leanna Lewis finished 14th (20:13.6) in just the second meet of her career.
 
Although not part of the Spartans' five point scorers, Dorcas Kosgei turned in a terrific performance, taking 16th in 20:34.3.
