MEAC Track & Field Recap, Jan. 27-28

Kimaiyo Wins 5,000 Meters; Cole, Sigei Impress at VMI

LEXINGTON, Va. -- 
Mercyline Kimaiyo continued her strong start during the indoor track and field season as she won the 5,000 meters to highlight Norfolk State's effort during the Winter Classic, hosted by VMI on Friday and Saturday.
 
Kimaiyo, who also won the mile on Jan. 14 at the HBCU Showcase, won Saturday's 5,000-meter event by three seconds, finishing with a time of 17:53.93. In addition, she placed ninth in the mile, logging a time of 5:19.33.

On the men's side, Kai Cole crossed the finish line ahead of the rest not once, but twice, winning both the 60-meter and 200-meter dashes. The senior sprinter posted a 6.75 in the 60 for a narrow victory, before clocking a 21.32 in his winning 200 meter race. Gidion Sigei made his impact in the longest events of the day. He took first in the 5,000 meters with a time of 14:46.04, before tallying a sixth-place finish in the mile (4:15.89).

Ali, Bell Lead Coppin Track & Field at Penn State

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- 
Making her season debut, Latifa Ali clocked the best times in the MEAC this season in both the 60- and 200-meter races, while Shenelle Tomlinson won the 600 meters at the Penn State National Open at Ashenfelter Track this weekend.
 
On Friday, Ali opened the 60-meter dash preliminaries with a win in her heat (7.55) before advancing to the final with a 7.49 in the semis. Ali took fifth in the final in 7.48, which is the top time in the MEAC. 

On the men's side, James Bell cleared 6' 9.0" in the high jump but took second in the event due to missing twice at 2.06m.  Bell's mark is the second-best in Coppin State history, trailing only Brandon Baskerville.

Morgan State Notches 10 Top-10s at Terrier Classic

BOSTON, Mass. -- 
The Morgan State men's track & field team recorded one first-place finish and 10 top-10 finishes at the John Thomas Terrier Classic on Friday. 
 
Junior Emmanuel Ibeh crossed the tape for gold in the 300 meters with a personal-best time of 36.30, while freshman Antonio Sims placed fourth (36.55), followed by junior Tarique Gooden (36.69) and senior Ali Bowens (36.79) in fifth and sixth place, respectively.

In the 60-meter hurdles, freshman Jadon Ra-Akbar turned in a personal-best time of 8.13 to finish in fourth place, followed by Duane Kizer in fifth place (8.19) and Malachi Wesley, who finished eighth (8.36).

South Carolina State Has Strong Showing in Gainesville Meet

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- 
The South Carolina State indoor track & field teams had a strong outing at the Alachua County Collegiate Invitational contested Thursday and Friday (Jan. 26-27) with one first, three second-place finishes and 14 top 10 showings.

The Bulldogs' Erick Hill won the long jump with a leap of 23-05.25 feet, while Jaden Barker was second in the 400 meters in a time of 49.21, Dexter Ratliff came in second in the weight throw with a toss of 55-06.50 feet and Kristopher Brown was runner-up in the 200 meters in a time of 21.95.
