NORFOLK, Va., Jan. 25, 2023—Coppin State junior Noxroy Wright was named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Men’s Track Athlete of the Week, presented by Coca-Cola and Howard University senior Jessica Wright was selected as Women’s Track Athlete of the Week, the conference office announced today. North Carolina Central freshman Lamont Victoria was named Men’s Field Athlete of the Week, while North Carolina Central senior Micah Fulton earned Women’s Field Athlete of the Week honors.
Wright (Jr., Kingston, Jamaica) won the men’s 60-meter dash at the Carolina Challenge, clocking in at 6.79 – the second-fastest time in the conference this season. He also posted the MEAC’s fastest mark in 2023 in the 200 meters, finishing fifth after running a 21.30.
Wright (Sr., Durham, N.C.) was runner-up in the women’s 400 meters at the Carolina Challenge, turning in a 54.01 – which is the best time in the MEAC this season and tied for the 26th-fastest time in all of Div. I. She also led the 4x400-meter relay squad to a second-place finish in 3:35.67 (best in the MEAC, 11th in the nation).
Victoria (Fr., Prince George, Va.) won the men’s high jump for the second straight week, taking gold at the Liberty Invite with a meet-record height of 2.15 meters (7 feet, 0.5 inches) – which ties him for the eighth-best mark in the nation.
Fulton (Sr., Pasadena, Calif.) tied the Liberty Invite meet record in the women’s triple jump, winning the event with a distance of 12.15 meters (39 feet, 10.5 inches), the second-best mark in the conference so far this season.
Other Top Performers
Jeff Hammond (Coppin State) came in second in the men’s long jump at the Carolina Challenge, leaping a MEAC-best 7.37 meters.
Jahmel Wyatt (Coppin State) ran a MEAC-best 2:11.79 in the women’s 800 meters at the Carolina Challenge.
Tayshaun Chisholm (Delaware State) won the men’s 60-meter hurdles at the Gotham Cup with a time of 8.04.
Khaliyah White (Delaware State) came in second in the women’s 60 meters (7.77) and fifth in the 200 meters (25.72) at the Gotham Cup.
Jermanie Byrd (Howard) came in fifth in the men’s 60-meter hurdles at the Carolina Challenge, running a 7.96.
Donnell Carter (North Carolina Central) ran a 48.26 in the men’s 400 meters at the Liberty Invite to finish second.
Laila Jackson (North Carolina Central) came in second in the women’s 800 meters at the Liberty Invite after turning in a 2:15.49.
