MEAC Announces We Are MEAC Diversity & Inclusion Initiative

NORFOLK, Va., Sept. 6, 2022 – The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) announces “We Are MEAC,” the conference’s initiative to celebrate community, heritage and identities through diversity and inclusion encompassing heritage and awareness months year-round.

The MEAC also releases a sub-logo representative of the initiative. “We” and “Are” are depicted as skin tones and the Progress Pride flag colors, respectively, to mark the many ethnicities and identities within the student-athletes and the greater MEAC communities.

The MEAC celebrated similar initiatives, such as Mental Health Awareness Month, Pride Month, and Black Business Month for the first time in conference history during the 2021-22 academic year. Similar campaigns hereafter will be listed under the new umbrella term We Are MEAC. Now officially named, the conference is doubling down on its efforts to spotlight its affinity groups.

“We are thrilled to celebrate heritage and awareness months under We Are MEAC,” MEAC Commissioner Sonja Stills said. “We Are MEAC reflects what the world looks like as well as its obstacles. Equipping our student-athletes, administrators and greater communities with resources and support is in line with our mottos of ‘step in’ and ‘educating student-athletes for the game of life.”

The conference’s next campaign under We Are MEAC is Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month, beginning Sept. 15, the official start of the national celebration. Other We Are MEAC campaigns to look forward to include Cancer Awareness Month, Black History Month, International Women’s Month, Mental Health Awareness Month, Asian & Pacific Islander Month and Pride Month.

We Are MEAC efforts will be shared across digital, campus-wide and community levels to include themed logos, student-athlete features, forums and more.
