MEAC Completes Day 1 of 2022 Outdoor Track & Field Championships

NORFOLK, Va., May 12, 2022
– The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) endured rainy and foggy conditions at Dick Price Stadium on Norfolk States University’s campus on Thursday in completing the first day of the 2022 Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
 
Morgan State leads the women’s team standings after three scored events, racking up 26 points on Thursday. Norfolk State is close behind with 22 points, while South Carolina State and 2022 indoor champion Howard have 15 and 14 points, respectively.
 
In the men’s team standings, 2022 indoor champion Norfolk State has 34 points to 22 for Morgan State. North Carolina Central is in third with 18, and Howard has 15.5 points to sit in fourth.
 
Zackery Dillon of Morgan State won the men’s discus with a mark of 50.23 meters, while teammate Johnelle Johnson took the women’s discus with a distance of 43.22 meters. Miazziah Rose gave the Bears three gold medals on the first day, clearing 1.63 meters on her first attempt to take gold in the women’s high jump.
 
In the men’s high jump, Marvin Jones of North Carolina Central cleared a personal-best 2.13 meters to take gold.
 
South Carolina State’s Jada Banks added to her 2021-22 trophy total by winning the women’s 10,000 meters. The MEAC cross country individual champion, who also won indoor titles in the 3,000 meters and 5,000 meters back in February, turned in a 40:17.46.
 
Norfolk State’s Evan Cheruiyot ended the night by winning the men’s 10,000 meters in 32:21.55.
 
Through four events in the women’s heptathlon, Howard’s Minyarn Smalls – who was the MEAC champion in the pentathlon during the indoor season – is in the lead with 2,957 points. She won two of the four events on Thursday, taking the shot put (12.97 meters) and 200 meters (25.73).
 
She also finished third in the high jump (1.50 meters) and 100-meter hurdles (15.40).
 
Howard also occupies the top two slots in the men’s decathlon; through five events, Nathaniel Are has 3,415 points and he holds a 162-point lead over teammate Ezekiel Hawkins. Are won the shot put (11.43 meters) and was top-three each in the 100 meters (11.39), long jump (6.87 meters) and high jump (1.83 meters).
 
Hawkins won the 100 meters in 11.09 and was second in the shot put (9.47 meters).
 
Friday’s action will get underway at 9 a.m. with the conclusion of the men’s decathlon and women’s heptathlon. The men’s and women’s shot put and long jump will all follow at 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m., and running events will kick off at 2:50 p.m. with the women’s 100-meter hurdles.
