VIRGINIA BEACH, Va., Feb. 23, 2022 – Norfolk State won four event titles on Wednesday at the Virginia Beach Sports Center en route to winning the 2022 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) men’s indoor track & field championship in dominant fashion.
The Spartans won their first title since 2013 and their 11
th overall.
Norfolk State finished with 175 points to second-place Howard’s 125. Morgan State (90), Delaware State (73) and Coppin State (60) rounded out the top five.
Spartans head coach Kenneth Giles was named the meet’s Outstanding Coach.
Morgan State’s Kobe-Jordan Rhooms repeated as Outstanding Field Performer after medaling in all three jumping events. Howard’s Gavin Williams was named Outstanding Runner after winning two events and recording a second-place finish during the meet.
The men’s first gold medal of the day went to Norfolk State’s Regan Kimtai. Kimtai, who was the MEAC’s Outstanding Runner during the 2020 indoor championship with North Carolina A&T State, turned in a 4:21.98 to edge out Williams.
Peter Kamanu gave Delaware State a sweep of the pole vault titles, clearing 4.40 meters (14 feet, 5.25 inches) to take the men’s event. Morgan State’s Zackery Dillon won the men’s shot put with a mark of 17.07 meters (56 feet).
The first running event of the day went to Delaware State’s Tayshaun Chisholm, who ran a 7.92 to win the 60-metrer hurdles.
Norfolk State won its first gold medal of the day in the 400 meters, when Trequan Barnes took gold in 47.02. The Spartans’ Kai Cole followed with a blistering 6.66 to win the 60 meters. Cole then took the 200 meters after running a 20.77.
He was the only runner in that race to break the 21-second mark.
Howard’s Chase Drewery won the triple jump title with a leap of 15.39 meters (50 feet, 6 inches). The Bison also picked up a gold medal in the 3,000 meters, as Williams ran an 8:54.20 to go along with the 5,000-meter title he won on Monday.
The day ended with South Carolina State edging out Coppin State in the 4x400-meter relay, 3:13.64 to 3:13.65.
The top three finishers in each event were named All-MEAC.

The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) is in its 51
st year of intercollegiate competition with the 2021-22 academic school year. Located in Norfolk, Va., the MEAC is made up of eight outstanding historically black institutions across the Atlantic coastline: Coppin State University, Delaware State University, Howard University, University of Maryland Eastern Shore, Morgan State University, Norfolk State University, North Carolina Central University and South Carolina State University.
