Howard Wins 2022 MEAC Women’s Indoor Track & Field Championship

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va., Feb. 23, 2022
– Howard University played the numbers game to perfection on Wednesday at the Virginia Beach Sports Center, overwhelming the running events to claim its first Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) women’s indoor track & field title in 33 years.
 
This marks Howard’s first indoor title since 1989 and its fourth overall.
 
The Bison finished with a meet-record 184 points, well ahead of second-place Norfolk State with 149. Morgan State (89), Delaware State (68) and Coppin State (52) rounded out the top five.
 
Bison head coach David Oliver was named the meet’s Outstanding Coach.
 
Minyarn Smalls, who on Tuesday won the MEAC title in the pentathlon, was named the meet’s Outstanding Field Performer.
 
The first gold medal of the day went to Delaware State’s Annalise Bond, who won the women’s pole vault after clearing 3.30 meters (10 feet, 10 inches). Morgan State’s Johnelle Johnson followed that up by taking MEAC gold in the women’s shot put with a toss of 13.35 meters (43 feet, 9.75 inches).
 
Kamillah Monroque of Coppin State, who on Tuesday won a gold medal as part of the Eagles’ distance medley relay squad, won individual gold on Wednesday in the day’s first running event, claiming the mile run in 5:07.99. She also took gold in the 800 meters after running a 2:14.74.
 
Monroque was named the meet’s Outstanding Runner.
 
Micah Fulton of North Carolina Central leaped 12.02 meters (39 feet, 5.25 inches) to win the women’s triple jump.
 
Howard’s march to the title began in the running events, and it started when Kaya-Rae Dunbar edged Norfolk State’s Indya Richards, 8.40 to 8.44, to take gold in the 60-meter hurdles. Howard’s Jessica Wright followed by taking the 400 meters in 53.20.
 
The Bison then won the 60 meters in another photo finish, as Sherri-Ann Norton edged out Coppin State’s Latifa Ali, 7.46 to 7.47. Howard had five finalists in that event.
 
Ali then won the MEAC title in the 200 meters, clocking in at 23.65.
 
South Carolina State’s Jada Banks, the 2021 MEAC cross country champion who on Monday won the gold medal in the 5,000 meters, added the 3,000 meters to her resume on Wednesday, taking the title with a time of 10:27.64.
 
The Bison capped the meet by setting a new record in the 4x400-meter relay, taking gold in 3:38.67.
 
The top three finishers in each event were named All-MEAC.
