Norfolk State Leads After Day 2 of 2022 MEAC Indoor Track & Field Championships

– The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) completed the second day of the 2022 Indoor Track & Field Championships on Tuesday at the Virginia Beach Sports Center, with the Norfolk State men and women both leading the way in the team standings.
 
For the men, the Spartans have 59 points, while second-place Howard isn’t too far behind with 50. Morgan State sits third with 42 points, and rounding out the standings are Delaware State (27), North Carolina Central (21), Coppin State (15), South Carolina State (13) and Maryland Eastern Shore (7).
 
On the women’s side, Norfolk State has 62 points to top the team standings, but Howard is close behind in second with 60. Morgan State (45), South Carolina State (22), Maryland Eastern Shore (17), North Carolina Central (16) and Coppin State (10) round out the standings.
 
Tuesday’s first gold medal went to Camren Wynder-Hill of Norfolk State, who won the men’s heptathlon with 4,815 points. He won three of the heptathlon’s seven events, and he finished 262 points ahead of teammate Jahquan Christopher, who came in second.
 
Howard’s Minyarn Smalls took the women’s pentathlon title, racking up 3,360 points and placing top-three in three of the five events.
 
Norfolk State also got field titles from Tynneisia Wilson and Arieana Parker on Tuesday; Wilson won the women’s high jump after clearing 1.56 meters (5 feet, 1.25 inches), while Parker took the weight throw with a toss of 17.54 meters (57 feet, 6 inches).
 
North Carolina Central’s Marvin Jones won the men’s high jump, clearing 2.10 meters (6 feet, 10.25 inches). Howard’s Nnamdi Olebara won gold in the men’s weight throw with a toss of 16.01 meters (52 feet, 6 inches).
 
The day closed with the men’s and women’s distance medley races. Coppin State ran a combined 12:12.22 to take gold in the women’s race, and Norfolk State took the men’s race with a 10:23.15.
 
Tuesday also saw the preliminary heats in the 60-meter hurdles, 400 meters and 60 meters. Indya Richards of Norfolk State (8.43) and Delaware State’s Tayshaun Chisholm (8.01) were the top times in their respective 60-meter hurdle events, while in the 400 meters, Jessica Wright of Howard posted the women’s fastest time in 54.32 and Coppin State put three (Shenelle Tomlinson, Kimani Alphonse and Cathryn Lane) in Wednesday’s final.
 
Trequan Barnes of Norfolk State led three Spartans into the men’s 400-meter final, posting the top preliminary time at 47.65. Dazon Harrison and Savien Hayes also qualified for the 400 final for the Spartans.
 
In the women’s 60 meters, Coppin State’s Latifa Ali posted the fastest time in 7.53, and Howard put five runners into Wednesday’s final. The men’s 60 saw the Eagles’ Joseph Manu claim the top time with a 6.73.
 
Wednesday’s action will begin at 9:30 a.m. with the women’s pole vault. Running events will start at 12:30 p.m. with the women’s mile run.
