VIRGINIA BEACH, Va., Feb. 21, 2022 – The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) completed the first day of the 2022 Indoor Track & Field Championships on Monday at the Virginia Beach Sports Center, with the Howard women and Howard and Norfolk State men leading the way in the team standings.
Howard holds a slim 22-19 lead over Morgan State in the women’s standings through two scored events, with South Carolina State in third with 13 points. Norfolk State (11), Maryland Eastern Shore (10) and North Carolina Central round out the women’s standings after day one.
On the men’s side, Howard and Norfolk State are tied with 20 points apiece after two scored events. Morgan State is third with 18 points, followed by Coppin State (10), Delaware State (6), South Carolina State (3) and North Carolina Central (1).
The first gold medal of the championship meet went to Jada Banks of South Carolina State; the reigning MEAC women’s cross country individual champion took the 5,000-meter race in 18 minutes, 3.14 seconds, lapping the field in the process.
Howard’s Gavin Williams took the men’s 5,000 meters in 15:16.46, and with Ayoade Adebiyi’s 15:20.02, the Bison went 1-2 in the event.
Howard also picked up a gold medal in the women’s long jump, as Nikayla Fitzgerald took the top spot with a leap of 5.84 meters (19 feet, 2 inches).
Coppin State’s Jeff Hammond won the men’s long jump with a leap of 7.59 meters (24 feet, 11 inches).
Norfolk State claimed the top spot in the preliminaries of the women’s 200 meters, with Malika Pride posting the top time at 23.89 seconds. Howard will have six finalists in the event, led by Jessika Gbai, who ran the second-fastest preliminary time with a 24.03.
For the men’s 200 meters, Norfolk State posted the three fastest preliminary times on Monday; Kai Cole was fastest at 21.01, followed by Trequan Barnes (21.25) and Anthony Franklin (21.47).
The men’s hepathlon got underway on Monday, with four of the seven events being competed. Norfolk State’s Camren Wynder-Hill leads the way with 2,148 points, just over 200 points more than Delaware State’s Julian Brown and almost 250 points over Howard’s Nathaniel Are.
The men’s heptathlon concludes Tuesday morning at 9 a.m.
