MEAC Names Kobe-Jordan Rhooms Nike Postgraduate Scholarship Recipient

NORFOLK, Va., Nov. 17, 2022 – The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) has announced that Morgan State track & field student-athlete Kobe-Jordan Rhooms has been named the 2022 recipient of the Nike Post-Graduate Scholarship.

“First and foremost, thanks to Nike for its support and its partnership with the MEAC,” Commissioner Sonja Stills said. “And congratulations to Kobe-Jordan Rhooms, who has achieved this honor through hard work and dedication, both in the classroom and in the realm of competition. We wish Mr. Rhooms future health and success.”

This past summer, Rhooms was also named the MEAC’s Male Student-Athlete of the Year.

A captain of the Bears track & field squad, Rhooms was the Outstanding Field Performer in the MEAC Indoor Track & Field Championships this past February after finishing second in the high jump (to earn Second Team All-MEAC honors) and third in both the long jump and triple jump, named Third Team All-MEAC in both events.

In this past outdoor season, Rhooms won the MEAC title in the triple jump, while finishing second in the high jump. The Montego Bay, Jamaica, native also competed in the triple jump at the NCAA East Preliminary

A May 2021 graduate of Morgan State with a degree in biology, Rhooms was a familiar presence on both the Deans’s List and the AD’s Honor Roll. He was a member of Morgan State’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), where he served as president this past academic year, as well as the Academic Enrichment Program and Caribbean Students Association.

Rhooms, who has also been named to the MEAC Commissioner’s All-Academic Team three times, is currently pursuing a graduate degree in public health. His eventual goal is to attend medical school, and he also wants to use grad school as an opportunity to take the MCAT.

In addition, Rhooms has worked on Morgan State’s campus as a servant leader with the Office of Residence Life and Housing as an academic enrichment staff – working directly with students to help them achieve academic success.

Since 2000, the MEAC has awarded post-graduate scholarships in the amount of $5,000 each to a deserving male and female student-athlete for their outstanding academic and athletic performance.

In order to receive the scholarship, a student-athlete must be in his or her final season of intercollegiate athletics eligibility and competition under MEAC and NCAA regulations for the sport in which he or she was nominated.

Additional criteria include a minimum grade-point average of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale), having performed with distinction as a member of the varsity team in the sport in which he or she has been nominated, the intention to enroll in a graduate degree program at an academically-accredited graduate or professional school, and having been an outstanding citizen as a student-athlete and excellent role model for the institution.

Nike, a longtime corporate partner with the MEAC dating back to the 1990s, renewed its multi-year agreement with the conference in September 2020 that made it the official apparel, accessory and equipment provider for the conference and a majority of MEAC institutions.
