Spartans, Aggies Lead After Day 2 of 2021 MEAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships

GREENSBORO, N.C., May 7, 2021—
With only the final day to go, the Norfolk State men and North Carolina A&T State women lead their respective team standings in the 2021 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Outdoor Track & Field Championship at the Irwin Belk Track on the campus of North Carolina A&T State.
 
But the Aggies were strong in several preliminary races on Friday, setting them up to possibly pull the championship sweep for the second straight year and third time in the last four.
 
On the women’s side, North Carolina A&T State leads the way with 54 points through six scored events, with Norfolk State close behind with 52 points. Morgan State is third with 35 points, and Delaware State and Howard are tied for fourth with 24 points apiece.
 
The men’s standings, through seven events, have Norfolk State on top with 63 points, followed by North Carolina A&T State with 54 points. Morgan State is third with 47, and North Carolina Central and Howard round out the top five with 21 and 20 points, respectively.
 
Madeleine Akobundu gave North Carolina A&T State its first women’s gold medal on Friday, winning the long jump with a distance of 6.00 meters (19 feet, 8.25 inches). Howard’s Ja’Tae Joyner was second at 5.76 meters (18 feet, 10.75 inches).
 
Howard struck gold in the women’s hammer throw, with Diana Effiom taking the event with a mark of 50.45 meters (165 feet, 6 inches).
 
The Aggies’ Loren James was second at 50.33 meters (165 feet, 1 inch).
 
Ezra Montiero gave the Bison a sweep of the hammer throw, winning the men’s event with a mark of 51.03 meters (167 feet, 5 inches) – more than three feet farther than second-place Kevin Fofanah of North Carolina A&T State.
 
NCAT’s Sandra Brown took the women’s pole vault, clearing 3.54 meters (11 feet, 7.25 inches). G’Jasmyne Butler also gave the Aggies a gold medal, taking the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 11:30.13.
 
Brandon Hicklin won the men’s long jump for NCAT, leaping 7.20 meters (23 feet, 7.5 inches) to take the gold medal. Regan Kimtai, who posted the fastest 800-meter preliminary time with a 1:51.49 earlier on Friday, wrapped up the day by giving the Aggies another gold medal – this one in the javelin, which Kimtai tossed 47.20 meters (154 feet, 10 inches).
 
The last title of the day went to Marvin Jones of North Carolina Central, who won the men’s high jump after clearing 2.09 meters (6 feet, 10.25 inches).
 
Morgan State’s Malik Brown won the men’s pole vault, clearing 3.52 meters (11 feet, 6.5 inches).
 
Delaware State’s Catherine Glenn won the women’s javelin throw to give the Hornets their first gold medal of the meet with a mark of 36.52 meters (119 feet, 9 inches).
 
Through four events in the women’s heptathlon, Norfolk State’s Dahja Price leads with 2,733 points and Morgan State’s Micaela Fleetwood is second with 2,251 points.
 
Through five events, Norfolk State’s Camren Wynder-Hill leads the men’s decathlon with 3,110 points. Teammates Joshua Sutton (2,991), Sadiq Nurse (2,874) and Biagio Perrello (2,667) round out the decathlon field.
 
In preliminary action, North Carolina A&T State took the top four spots in the women’s 100-meter hurdles, with TeJyrica Robinson leading the way with a 12.99 on Friday. Akobundu followed up her long jump title by winning her heat in 13.19, while Paula Salmon posted the third-fastest time in 13.22.
 
Breanne Bygrave was the fourth Aggie to qualify for the final, running a 13.57.
 
The Aggies also had four finalists in the men’s 400 meters, led by Trevor Stewart, who ran a 45.52, and Randolph Ross, Jr., who turned in a 46.21. Akeen Sirleaf (47.59) and Elijah Young (47.78) also qualified for the finals in the 400 meters.
 
NCAT also had five of the eight finalists in the women’s 100 meters. Cambrea Sturgis led the way in 11.18, and Norfolk State’s Kiara Grant posted the second-fastest preliminary time, winning her heat with an 11.34.
 
Rasheem Brown of North Carolina A&T State had the fastest preliminary time in the men’s 110-meter hurdles with a 13.82; teammate Cory Poole won his heat with the second-fastest prelim time, 13.91.
 
Kimtai’s effort in the men’s 800 prelims led an effort which saw three NCAT runners qualify for the finals. Abbas Abbkar was second with a 1:51.81 on Friday, and Mar’Quise McGee qualified for the final with a 1:55.55.
 
Saturday’s action starts at 9 a.m. with the conclusion of the men’s decathlon. FloTrack will have live broadcast coverage starting at 12 p.m., when running events begin.
