GREENSBORO, N.C., May 6, 2021—The 2021 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Outdoor Track & Field Championships got underway Thursday evening at the Irwin Belk Track on the campus of North Carolina A&T State University.
Thursday’s schedule consisted of preliminary heats for the men’s and women’s 200 meters, as well as the finals for the women’s and men’s 10,000 meters.
Norfolk State’s Fridah Koech won the first gold medal of the 2021 championships, taking the women’s 10,000 meters in 38:19.77. The Spartans swept the top two steps of the podium, as Faith Jemutai came in second with a time of 39:16.71.
That one-two finish gives the Spartans 18 points in the team standings after one event.
On the men’s side, North Carolina A&T State’s Morris Kimble won the 10,000 meters after turning in a 31:03.64. He bested a field that included four runners from Norfolk State – including second-place finisher Meshack Kipchirchir (32:21.39).
Norfolk State leads the men’s standings with 23 points after one event.
In the women’s 200-meter preliminary heats, North Carolina A&T State swept the top four times. Kamaya Debose-Epps was the fastest with a 23.40, while Cambrea Sturgis (23.46), Delecia McDuffie (23.53) and Jonah Ross (23.69) followed.
The men’s 200 meters saw the Aggies claim the six fastest times in the heats. Javonte Harding turned in a preliminary-best 20.80 to win his heat. Trevor Stewart also won his heat, running a 20.83 to post the second-fastest time. Randolph Ross (21.18) had the third-fastest time and Tavarius Wright ran the fourth-fastest time, winning his heat in 21.20.
Daniel Stokes (21.25) and Akeem Sirleaf (21.25) were fifth- and sixth-fastest, respectively.
Friday’s action will get underway at 10 a.m. with the start of the men’s decathlon. The women’s hammer throw will also go off at 10 a.m. to kick off the day’s field action, and the first race of the day will be the women’s 100-meter hurdle prelims at 1 p.m.
